Newbies' website, scroll down, snap back up. Front Page 2003

I am working on a couple of websites that both, with different pages, have a
problem with scrolling down, then the display snaps back up to the beginning.
The time lag varies from page to page, anywhere from 3-4 seconds to 15-16
seconds. This happens on other viewers' computers and no one seems to know
why. It is best seen on www.aventuraproductions.net/ which otherwise went
together withou much trouble, probably because I started out with a complete
a MS template. The other site is much more complex and is posing more
problems, probably because I am building it up from the ground floor, didn't
know what I was doing in the first place, and have been playing catch-up ever
since. See www.networkcentral.ca.net/

I also got bollixed up on MS registration instructions about using e-mail
addresses, etc.

Please help.

I don't have any problems on your pages.
The second web site you posted, I get "this page cannot be displayed".
Don't understand your comment about email addresses and registration.

no bounce up here either.

I have three responses to my question and tried to Reply, but the Reply
button didn't work -- until now. What happened was one of my many spy-ware
programs cut in and I didn't realize it. So I did the Control/Mouse click
thing and it worked.
Now, back to my question and your responses. I have checked and rechecked
from my computer and had 3 friends situated around the country do the same.

We all are able to access both sites. http://www.aventuraproductions.net/
and http://www.networkcentral.ca.net. So I can't explain your inability to
do likewise. Which raises an interesting question.

Also, the phenomenon one of you referred to as "bounce" seems to occur on
all our computers in about a 20 second period on both sites. Which tells me
this is a MS Front Page phenomenon. You have to be patient. Scroll down to
the bottom of the page, using any of the several tools. Fastest of course is
to drag the right side bar.

When you get to the bottom of the page, hands off the mouse so you don't
blame the mouse. In about 20 seconds the page flashes up to the top. It
happens every time for me, and my friends confirm. We just don't know what
to call it or what to do about it.

Also, I haven't been able to find how to rate your answers. Would you be
so kind as to advise, just to help an idiot newbie break in?

Angry Prophet Thersites, aka APT for a new and exciting program to get rid
of the IRS and the income tax. See APTTax.com for Automated Payment
Transaction Tax -- a 1/4th of one percent tax on all financial transactions
over a generous base to exclude the bills us poor folks pay for food, etc.,
collected by computer. No more forms. No more individual or corporate
income taxes and all those exclusions and exemptons and preferential
treatments that favor the rich folks.

Thanks for your help.

Sorry you waited so long, Rob. I certainly appreciate your patience.
Perhaps you may find your reward in the hereafter.

But, accepting these conflicting reports as being true, what can the answer
be? Is this a totally new phenomenon, or has it been reported before? What
would you call it, to be technically precise? Is "bounce" the correct or
only term? (These computers are so damned literal. If you don't ask the
right question, you don't get any answer.)
My initial statements that this occurred between 2-3 and 20 seconds was
misleading. I had forgotten that time elapsed during the scroll down
process, which accounted for the shorter times as I was using various devices
to get to the end of the page. So, I find the metronomic repetitions when I
get to the bottom quickly to be significant. Timings like that aren't random
matters and suggest a mechanical answer.

What do I need to say when I contact Microsoft about this? (They are so
hard to get ahold of, I want to be right on target, if possible.)

Thanks again.

Dunno if "bounce" is an official/technical term...it seemed a fitting
description of what you were describing. It may be a browser setting on your
machine to refresh the page(?)...do you have any other browser windows open
at the time this is happening?

I kinda seriously doubt this is a FP issue though. And, since several of us
cannot duplicate the problem not sure you're gonna wanna spend money on MS
tech support. Only installation issues are free, other issues are pay as you

No other browser besides MS via Google or Yahoo.

Cost money or not, I'm going to have to solve the problem as people viewing
the site, including a teacher whose student was interested in
networkcentralca, have complained. If people can't read my stuff because the
page flips back up as they study, then there is no point to my site.

Too many people have reported this to be simply a problem on my end alone,
although certainly something on my end launched the problem. I must confess
I didn't do any refreshing -- because I don't have the foggiest idea what
refreshing is all about, so I instinctively refrain from punching buttons
when I don't know what purpose they serve. I tried MS help for "refresh" but
drew a blank. Enigmatic bunch, aren't they?

I'll give it a go, now. What have I got to lose?

I thought you people were reviewed from time to time or consulted with MS?

Anyhow, thanks for the help. You sure spent enough time on it.

The MVPs are in contact with the gods at MS...I'm not an MVP.

AH but NOW I see networkcentralCA.net !! you originally had the link to
networkcentral.ca.net !!
AND this one DOES jump/bounce and it's probably due to the refresh you have
here:

<meta http-equiv="REFRESH" content="20">

Just remove it for now.

Eureka! You provided the clue, Refresh.
I refreshed every page I could find. Then, when I got tired of pushing the
Refresh button, I looked around for other curiosities. Saw a notation in the
extreme left about Optimizing. Tried Help for notes on optimizing, which is
still over the distant horizon for me, and while runing down the list saw a
note on Refresh, which hadn't come up before when I was looking for Refresh.

It turns out there is a short note on Refresh a Web page or a view. The
first line just says click the Refresh button, without expanation. But the
second line says you can create a page that automatically refreshes when that
page is visited from a Web browser, which of course it is every time you work
on your page or look at it in your computer or in your ISP's computer in
Internet Heaven.

So, we're on the trail. In Page view click Design. Right click the page,
then click Page Properties, then click the Custom tab, then click Add, and
now we see a dialogue box with a big long name, and a couple of lines where
you can type in Refresh and the number of seconds you want for the
auto-refresh.

So, my page one and the last page in the aventuraproductions.net site didn't
have any entries in these lines. But all the other pages did, and the name
entered was Refresh and the number entered in each was 20 seconds.

I'm damned if I know how they got there. I sure didn't put them there and
no one else works on my computer. Just a MS gremlin, I suppose.

This also explains why Microsoft is so hard to get ahold of. They expect
dummies like me will spend a little time checking out all the dials and
controls they spent so much time creating. But they really screw up in their
basic instructions. Bad indexing and cross referencing. They really presume
too much. I think advertising writers, not dummy users, must write their
copy. They need to publish a comprehensive cross-indexing system like the
writers of most scholarly books provide.

Anyhow. Thanks for your help.

The URL you enter was incorrect

On that site You are causing your problem, w/ the tag

Thank you, Stefan.

I see where I incorrectly entered the URL in my post here. Sloppy me --
getting blind, I suppose. Sorry.

On your space bar point: Are you saying that when I am typing text, I can't
use the space bar? What else does one do when a space is required? And what
does using the space bar do to the end product? I hadn't noticed any
aberration in either of these websites that I can relate to space bar use.
What did you notice that provoked your comment?

I think I can see by your comment on the 20 second bounce -- which solution
I just wandered into as I note in my last reply of Feb. 8th -- that you must
be looking at tags and html while I, simple soul, just look at the end
product for hints and clues. I certainly have a heap of learning to do.

Thanks for your help.

More to Stefan:

When I went back to your post to check the several comments you made, this
window vanished. So after several tries, I gave up and replied piece-meal.

By "word/art" do you mean the printed material in my banner? And by "change
the layout for all useers w/different font settings" are you saying that only
users with IE can view these fonts? If so, what is an IE composer to do?
How do I know what fonts other systems may or may not reproduce?

Are you suggesting that I should compose the "word/art" in Word and then
make a picture of it which I will then paste in the banner or wherever I want
to use it?

Wow! If so, that would sure solve a lot of positioning problems I'm having.

Thanks some more.

The URL you enter was incorrect
- apparently it is http://www.networkcentralca.net/ not http://www.networkcentral.ca.net

On that site You are causing your problem, w/ the tag
<meta http-equiv="REFRESH" content="20">
- remove it

And the word/shape art will only be seen by user of IE

On the other site you laid out your page by using the space bar to position text
- can change the layout for all users w/ different font settings

Do NOT use WordArt, AutoShapes or any of the Draw tools in FP. They rely on
VML and are usually IE5+ only, other browser may display only a gray box, or
a downlevel gif...not to mention positioning problems.

Stick to standard Fonts - do a Google for Web Safe Fonts - Since you cannot
know what fonts a view may have on their machine. If you must have a fancy
font for a banner or a few words, create a .gif or .jpg for that.

Thank you, Stefan.
On your space bar point: Are you saying that when I am typing text,
I can't use the space bar? What else does one do when a space is
required? And what does using the space bar do to the end product?
I hadn't noticed any aberration in either of these websites that I
can relate to space bar use. What did you notice that provoked your
comment?

Stefan is more expert than I.

But in regards to the comment about space bar, I would say that the idea is
this

Sure, use the space bar to separate words. Or to add one or two spaces
between sentences.

But, if you want to space elements, don't just press the space bar and hold
it down.
It is far better to use a new element,
e.g.:
A new para,
A new table,
A new cell in an existing table,

Holding the space bar down will cause a proliferation of these:
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

This is messy code and reading between the lines of other replies, different
browsers may do different things with it.

As I implied, I am a relative newbie, but think about positioning elements
on the page and use the various elements to do this, not lots and lots of
spaces,
