Hi,

First of all, hi to everyone - I'm new to this group.

Ok, now the hard bit!!!

I've just purchased win XP. I've also purchased a new Maxtor 160gb hard
drive.

I'm currently running Win ME - I know I know - but hey it worked for me!!!

Are there any decent sites dedicated to a successful and trouble
installation process for XP?

I have been told that I can't install over WinME, hence me splashing out on
a new drive.

So I'm going to do a brand new install. My motherboard and associated
devices appear to be ok. I've already used that upgrade advisor prog.

Any and all help would be most appreciated.

Regards,

Pat.

Simply boot from the WinXP installation CD. You'll be offered
the opportunity to delete, create, and format partitions as part of
the installation process. (You may need to re-arrange the order of
boot devices in the PC's BIOS to boot from the CD.)

I'm trying to install XP but for some reason the install process cannot find
/ copy a file called 'cmdide.sys' from the CD ( I pressume) to some strange
named file (which I imagine the install process has to create) on my 'C'
drive.

Any and all help would be most appreciated.

Greetings --

Problems copying files or corrupted files during installation are
most often caused by defective or sub-standard hardware; in order of
likelihood, either RAM, the hard drive, or the motherboard. On much
less frequent occasions, a bad CD or defective CD drive can also cause
this.

Are you calling my PC crap - Only joking!!!

Well let me tell you - it's not the RAM, the hard drive or the motherboard.
The CD Rom is brand new too.

So that only leaves the Cd itself!!! Now where did I put that phone number
for Microsoft.......

"Yes, Hello - is that Bill Gates...............................

The newness of a hardware component is no guarantee of its being
defect-free, unfortunately. Also, RAM that is incompatible with the
motherboard can cause this problem.
