Greetings,

I installed XP three or four days ago and all was going well until I got
the old BSoD tonight after a reboot, with a STOP 0x0000007F error. I did
not change any hardware, its not a brand new system. I did install Roxio
CD creator and that seems to be what blew it all up.

I am only slightly amused at the suggestions on the screen which are
impossible to execute since the system will not boot up. Kind of hard to
do much when you can't get there. I did boot the CD and ran chkdsk which
found an error, but didn't solve the problem. The BSoD message says to run
CHKDSK /F which is as old as DOS itself, but the XP chkdsk does not like
the /F parameter, only a /P, so I am not impressed so far with microsoft
giving out stupid, invalid instructions.

Roxio says nothing about blowing up the system, only about the CD player
becoming inoperable and how to edit the registry to fix it.

Google gave me lots of information on what the message means, but not one
piece of useful data on how to solve the problem. If I cannot boot the
program, how can I use any of the suggestions about registry, removing
hardware, etc????

The question is not so much specifically how to fix this error, but when
the computer won't boot, how do I fix the problem? Yes, I have a backup
from the backup program, but if I cannot boot up, how to get the backup
installed, and why the hell would I need to restore ANY backup if I can
boot the system??

I am new to XP, not computers, but little M$ experience. This is really
stupid from where I sit, so perhaps someone can tell me how to approach
this? It certainly looks like I have to reinstall the entire system. If I
do that, any chance it will behave like the old W95 deal where it will
keep all the old settings if I reinstall?

Thank you all for any help or advice. Its my son's computer, and he is
gonna freak when he finds out I blew it up......

Much obliged,

John

try repeatedly pressing ESC button while windows is
booting, it could skip loading the problem drivers.

From the recovery console you can enable/disable drivers/services.

DISABLE:

DISABLE servicename

The DISABLE command disables a Windows 2000 system service or driver.

servicename: The name of the service or driver to be disabled. Use the
LISTSVC

command to display all eligible services or drivers to disable. DISABLE
prints

the old start_type of the service before resetting it to SERVICE_DISABLED.

Because of this, you should record the old start_type, in case it is
necessary

to re-enable the service.

The start_type values that the DISABLE command displays:

SERVICE_DISABLED

SERVICE_BOOT_START

SERVICE_SYSTEM_START

SERVICE_AUTO_START

SERVICE_DEMAND_START

Not sure what Roxio told you to do, but you may be able to disable the
driver from the recovery console. This newsgroup is Windows 2000, so you
might have better response from microsoft.public.windowsxp groups (if you're
posting to multiple groups, please cross-post and not multi-post. Use
commas "," instead of semicolons ";" between group names).
