Using the Printer and Faxes in windows XP can we send fax(right from the
computer and not by attaching any fax machine) to any numbers ?
Is there any possibility that we can receive faxes also in the computer ?

Yes, it is possible. You will need a faxmodem, which is either a card that
goes into an internal slot inside the machine, or an external device that
attaches via USB. Then you need to install Win XP Fax Services by running
Control Panel, Add?Remove programs, Add/Remove Windows components.
The Fax Services will add a printer named Fax. To send a fax, you display a
document on screen in the program that created it, and print to the printer
named Fax. You will be prompted for the receiving fax number.
The service can also receive faxes, storing them as .TIF files which can be
displayed in the Fax Console (a component of the Fax Services) or by
Microsoft Office Imaging.

.... and, of course, connect the faxmodem to a standard telephone line.

by following what tedmi and MyveryOwnSeif has said we can send faxes
and receive faxes....... will we have a FAX number ?
or how will we receive faxes ?

If you have only one phone line, you'll be sharing it between voice and fax
usage. The same phone number serves both uses. It's an awkward setup, but
maybe useful if you don't receive too many faxes.

Basically, you have to know when somebody is going to send a fax and turn
on the fax-receiving software then. There may be more automatic ways to
share the line, but I don't have experience with them.

Personally, I use the modem to send faxes but not receive them.

See the bill from your telephone company for the number assigned to the
standard telephone line to which you connected (or will connect) your
faxmodem.
