I'm looking for a inkjet printer. I'll be using it to print pictures. Not
many digital camera types. I'll be using text and graphics for school. If I
come across a picture I like I might print it. I don't want a photo printer.
Can anyone tell me a good one to buy? I'm looking for one that's quite.
separate ink cartridges would be nice.

I would look at the Epson C82 or the new C84. They are fast, waterproof on
plain paper, individual carts. The C84 costs $99 and has a mail in $20
rebate.

Canon i850 if you can find one. It looks like it's being replaced by
the i865 or something, and the i850 is practically being given away by
the stores that still have a few.

I heard canon's printing quality for text was poor? Also, looked up the
epson c84 and it's very hard to find.

Just the idea that you won't be getting any electronic chips on your
cartridges is reason enough to get the Canon i850 or its follow-up.
It is not a true photo printer (only 4 colors), but when pressed will
give lab quality digital photos. Very silent, fast feeding with high
quality text/graphics output, and extremely easy to refill - about $5
a refill. How's that for a student budget? (Note: I buy bulk ink from
atlanticinkjet.com, exact same output as Canon inks).

God no! I have the Canon i850 and it prints the sharpest, laser-like
text I've ever seen from a home printer (personal experience with 6
printers). People with poor text output most likely haven't aligned
their print head properly or used really cheap paper.

okay, I totally want to get this printer now and am very excited. Where can
I get it or the Canon I850 or I860? I have a Dell preferred account but of
course they don't carry it.

Go to any large computer store and ask for demos of text on different
brands and models within your price range, I think you will find that
most new inkjets of any brand are quiet and are producing better text
and simple graphic printing than earlier models.

I assume you're in the States - I'm in Canada. Got mine delivered free
from Staples online, and I know Costco stores in Canada and the US were
carrying them too.

Read this fine review at the link below, it's the one that sold me on
it. My sister has this printer too - we both agree that it is by far the
best printer we've ever owned. It is, however, in the process of being
replaced by a newer model, the i860 or i865, I forget the number. I
think it's just a minor facelift for digital camera users, so you'd be
better off searching for the i850.

does the printer print as well with text and normal graphics? What type of
paper is recommended? I'm also looking at the Epson c84 at bestbuy.com for
$99.00 w/ no shipping and handling fee. Any suggestions here?

Buy the C84 if its is half the printer the C82 is you will love it!!
I have a C82 and a CX5200 all in one and love them both. Great text and
nice graphics

I would say yes. Important: the better the paper, the better the
graphics.

Canon, of course, would like you to use their paper, but it is overly
expensive. For very good quality images and text use a relatively high
quality 24 lb "inkjet" paper, not 20 lb "copy/multi-use paper", though
copy paper will usually print pretty good depending on the brand.
Experiment.

For absolute best images use special coated and glossy papers (for
digital photos). Epson "Photo Paper" (52 lbs), quite glossy, is a
wonderful choice for high quality presentation work. I use it for
greeting cards, booklet covers, CD liners, etc. 100 sheets for about
$30 Canadian dollars at Costco. Very affordable.

I don't like Epson for their electronic chips on their cartridges.
An unnecessary evil ;-). And from experience, Canon cartridges are
easier to refill (they're clear, you can see how much ink you
have left, or how much to fill).

Could be a defective unit that was returned to Canon for service. A new
unit was then sent to the original owner and the repaired unit sold as,
you guessed it, "refurbished". My Epson 740 was a refurbished unit. It
doesn't mean that you may encounter any more problems than with a new
unit. However, I don't suggest you buy it unless it has the standard one
year guarantee.

Its modified to take the smart media and has Photo-black cartridge as
well. 5 cartridge total.

It has been opened. Possibly used and returned, or maybe just
returned. In any case they are prohibited from selling them as new,
but as refurbed.

A person is selling this canon with no warranty on it. Should I go with the
epson c84 unit? How good is that unit? I had a hard time finding any reviews
of it.

look at the reviews for the C82. The C84 is the next generation of it.
The C84 yields 1350 pages per black cart and about 600 color. The C84
is rated at 22 ppm black and (don't quote me on this) 15ppm color. This
printer is geared towards mostly text but prints a nice pic on matte paper
and is a special glossy paper is coming out for the C84
