Newbie question re virus scan

I have a winxp (home) machine and am using the most current Avast
(4.6.404?). I cannot figure out how to initate virus scanning within
archive files (zip etc)
Can anybody give me a clue, phrased in the most simplistic terms possibe.

From the Simple User Interface page > More details that pops up when
Avast! is started:

"Besides the sensitivity, you can also select whether to parse so
called archives (also known as packed or compressed files). These
files include ZIP, RAR, ACE, ARJ etc."

The selection is made by checking "Scan archive files" on a *small*
menu that pops up from the top of the SUI window after you've
selected drives/files to be scanned.
