Hi all,

Im hoping someone kind can point me in the right direction, given that
Ive been landed in the deep end.

Its a few years since I played with the inner workings of NT Domain
Controllers and Active Directory is confusing me a little.

I need to add several new computers to an existing domain which was
setup by someone else.

I can add the computer in Active Directory, but it is not picking up
the domain.

Showing 'Properties' on any of the new users shows a blank in the DNS
Name,

Yet in the 'Properties' of any of the existing machines this reads as
MACHINENAME.mydomain.co.uk

Additionally, if I try and use the Network ID wizard on the client
machines to connect to the server, I get a 'domain controller could
not be found' message.

Could someone please either point me in the direction of an online
idiots guide to this procedure or tell me in simple terms where Im
going wrong??

The server is Win2K SP 4. Client PCs are running XP Pro.

Thanks :-)

J.

Not sure if you are using DHCP or manually entering your DNS entries.
You might try manually entering the IP address of your DNS server. Use the
same one listed as on one of the computers already in the domain.

We're DHCP on 192.168.129.x

From command prompt run ipconfig /all and compare with a working computer.
However since that are set to automatically get DNS this may not be your
problem unless there is a network issue.

Very unclear terminology used here.

Make sure the PCs you are adding are set up to join the
domain and not simply members of a workgroup, they simply
do not pick up the domain, they need to be told they are
in the domain. This is regardless of whether you had added
them into AD.( My computer-properties, network )Also make
sure the network addresses on the pc's and subnet mask are
correct ie the PC's are in the same subnet as the
server.Users dont appear in the DNS......

Bullseye I think
