I have to choose between an Epson printer and an HP one, they are
around 50 euros each right now, and I want some opinions, not only
about printing quality (I have little interest in color printing, I
will do mostly text), but also about which is going to be cheaper in
the long run, taking into account paper and ink costs.

You need to tell folks what specific printers you are considering. Otherwise,
no one could tell you which might cost more to operate.

FWIW, I'd suggest a Canon.

The answer is easy. You want a laser printer. Quality is high, cost is more
economical and life expectency probably double.

Yes the initial cost is higher but for text it's what you want.

If the original poster intends to do lots of heavy printing, as in an
office environment, where speed and durability is an issue, then I tend
to agree. Toner cartridges are easy to replace and costs are a write-off
anyway.

But if the OP is using it for the home or a small office, then an
inexpensive inkjet is just as economical as a laser when refilling the
cartridges. The Canon i560/860 models have the easiest cartridges to
refill. I can refill my black ink tank faster and with less mess than
most experienced people can change a toner cartridge. :)

I'll use it for home use, preparing homework assignments, not too much
work. And I can't find any cheap Canon printers available here. I'm
considering those two:

EPSON STYLUS C43UX
HP DESKJET 3550

Both around 60 euros.

Either printer would be fine I guess. Just check the costs of
replacement ink cartridges and buy based on that.

Avoid both of them. Both have small, expensive cartridges since they're
such low end printers. I would go with a HP DeskJet 5150 or the Canon
i250/i320/i350 - or if you want to spend a little more, the i560. Both the
DeskJet 5150 and i560 cost more than 60euros I'm sure, but it'll be worth it
in the long run. There's no sense in paying less now but spending 10x more
in ink in the long run right? :)
