Hi

I am just getting to grips with Movie maker. I put a post on another video
ng and was directed to here.

I have saved some dv footage to my pc and used the recommended medium
quality format. I have since been advised not to use the WMV format for
capture and to use DV to maintain quality. Will the finished product of
what i have captured be limited by this or can i up the quality at a later
stage (i have already edited it)

thanks
Gary

Hi There,

I have actually seen others say that converting a low quality video to
DV-AVI recovers the quality....NO NO NO

The rule of thumb is simple and resolute...Every action you perform on
your video degrades it.

This does not mean that simply passing it through Movie Maker will give
you a poorer quality. But when you overlap to video clips, something of both
will be lost. Mostly that does not matter because its the transition you are
actually after.

So, if you start with a medium quality WMV file the best you will ever
get it to be will occur when you do nothing to it. This will give you a
medium quality WMV or DV-AVI file back. (Converting to DV-AVI format is a
matter of re-arranging information within the file and will not necessarily
harm the quality.....but it will still be just medium quality)

Hope this helps.

Hi

Thanks for reply. Is the quality i have used suitable to create a VCD for
viewing on a domestic DVD player and TV or should i start again.

thanks again

Hi there,

The quality may be good enough...I always save to DV-AVI as I am not
constrained by storage space. The whole thing is I suppose a bit like making
a burger. If you use a prime cut, that will be just great...but if you make
the same burger out of scrag-end.....maybe not so good. (Burgers is
something I am an expert on....I have been known to chase the Golden 'M' on
two continents.....maybe a third before I am done. !!)
