Hi everyone,

My company is looking at developing a PC based keyboard system to take out
on a theatrical tour next year.

Basically the system we have at the moment is a PC with XP Pro SP2, a few
software synthesizers (from Native Instruments), and a host for the synths
(Brainspawn Forte - http://www.brainspawn.com).

All the samples used by the synths are stored on a separate (very fast)
hard drive in the computer.

The problem is - keyboard players like to fiddle around with the system
and the things go wrong, and someone installs a game, and then that
crashes the PC mid-show, and blah blah blah (musicians are notoriously
difficult people - i know because I am one! :-) ).

I would like to havea system that is hard coded, with all the software
(host and soft synths) pre loaded, and absolutely no way of getting into
the system. The host config file will be loaded onto a disk with the
samples, and that's it... Is this possible with XPE, or am I barking up
the wrong tree?

Many thanks,

Martin Hughes

Hi Martin!

XP Embedded will be very right choice for you.
maybe you need to lock and protect the system OS from modifying, hacking
system binaries, or installing unneeded applications.
EWF, Enhanced Write Filter, one of Embedding Enabling Features in XP Embedded
will be the good solution to your need. EWF is to protect partition(s) as
you want in runtime. It's not same with 'read only'. At the view of users
or application, any data can be written in protected volume but data are
stored another seperated 'overlay' by EWF in real. so the protected partition
by EWF can be kept same all the time.

refer this page for details :

EWF sounds like it's what you're after. They'll be able to change things
and install things... but as soon as they reboot, it's all back to how
it was.
