I have never had a printer before, but now I need one to print homework
assignments for my school. Is there a chance that if I get a cheap one
I will get (noticably) lesser quality in printing text? Printing images
is not really needed in my case.

Look at print quality in stores.

In my experience, modern ink-jets are so good that they all give good
text.

If you plan to buy an inkjet printer, make sure you get inkjet or
multipurpose paper. Regular copier paper absorbs too much ink and becomes
all wrinkled.

No. The cheapest printer made will do an excellent job of printing
text. More quality than your teachers require. Check the weekly
specials.
Just make sure that the printer you buy has the ink cartridges with
it. It will say so on the box. As you may have noticed, the
cartridges costs more than the printer sometimes.

If you don't need colour, definitely go for a laser printer.
Much cheaper per page cost and probably much faster and better text
than from an inkjet.
There are bargains on new ones, but first check out the cost of toner,
both from the original manufacturer and clones or refills. A used one
can be a good deal, especially if you can get some warranty.
