Hi,

I am running DNS at home but since I can't have reverse as my ISP wont allow
to. Is there anyway that I can host DNS and WEB at home and Email with
either my ISP or another hosting company?

I am running windows 2003 server with dns server (no AD) and IIS

Thanks

You can ask your ISP to create a reverse entry for your MX record, unless
this is an ADSL or cable ISP, then they won't do that. Cable won't even let
inbound SMTP, HTTP or FTP to their residential subscribers, and in some
cases no outbound SMTP either.

Can you elaborate on what ISP you have?

I have ADSL with static IP, DNS and IIS has no issue so far, I haven't tried
with SMTP but my ISP said that they wont block anything, so I guess SMTP is
fine too.

Let's say my ISP doesn't want to create reverse entry for MX records, is
there anyway to host dns and web at home while email at another email
hosting company???

Yes, you can host email elsewhere. Just change the mail FQDN to point to the
other mail server.

Hi,

That's the thing that I dont know, or dont understand.

If I got account with an ISP, let's say (e-mail address removed)

and mail server to access to that account, let say "mail.server1.ISP.com"
with IP 111.111.111.111

I got my domain is xyz.com at IP 222.222.222.222

And I have mail.xyz.com as MX record.

How do I change the mail FQDN to point to other mail server and how do I
access my email? Still through mail.xyz.com or mail.server1.ISP.com?

Hung Nguyen

If I am understanding you correctly you have an ISP hosting your email at
their server "mail.server1.ISP.com" but you would like to access the mail
server by mail.xyz.com?

Simple, set your MX record to send email to "mail.server1.ISP.com" which
probably has a reverse lookup for its IP.
Clients do not use or care what the MX record says, so you can create a
Cname record for mail.xyz.com that points to mail.server1.ISP.com. Do not
use mail.xyz.com in your MX record because MX records cannot point to a
Cname record for the mail server.

This way your MX reverses correctly to the ISP's mail server hostname and
HELO name, while your mail clients can use mail.xyz.com to access the server
to retrieve mail.

Hi Kevin,

I am not quite sure that you solve my issue but to be clarify:

I want an email with (e-mail address removed)

And I want people to send email to me using the address (e-mail address removed)
And if possible, I want to send and receive email using "mail.xyz.com"

Let say I got a friend has web and mail hosting with an ISP, he can have 10
email accounts but he use only 3, he is willing to give me 1 account for
free as I cannot have my own mail server.
Let say his hosing mail server at mail.server1.ISP.com

So, come back to the original question, If I have my domain xyz.com and web
hosted at home, can I have my email hosted somewhere else, and of course,
when I said my email, I meant the address will look like (e-mail address removed)

Regards,

Hung Nguyen

BTW, I am using windows 2k3 and MS DNS server

Will the ISP host mail for xyz.com?

If the will, then all you need is an MX record in xyz.com giving
mail.server1ISP.com as the mail server.

If they will not host mail for XYZ.com then the answer is no, you cannot use
(e-mail address removed) and retrive your mail from the ISP's server.

From another view point, I have a mail server, I can host the xyz.com mail
domain for you, but your MX record in xyz.com must use my mail server's name
as the mail server.
You would not be able to point your MX record to mail.xyz.com.
But, you could create a Cname or A record for mail.xyz.com giving my mail
server's IP, you could use this name in Outlook Express as the mail server,
but cannot use the name in the MX record.

Hi Kevin,

It's working for me now.

What I did is create a A host called "mail" with ISP mail server IP address.

Then create MX record with FQDN points to "mail"

At my friend ISP host, I create account with xyz.com domain and that's it,

I am cheching mail through mail.xyz.com and test email send to (e-mail address removed)
arrrive OK, haven't tested sending email yet but I guess it would work

I have to say this experience with DNS is great, especially with many ideas
and help from you.

Thank you very much Kevin,

Hung Nguyen
