I am sorry in advance if this is not where I need to ask this.
I want to bring into my computer, digital movies from my digital camcorder. It has a 4 pin IEEE 1394 port on the camera. If I understand, I will need the cable and a capture card.
I got very confused about the information on the various capture cards while surfing. I do not care anything about transferring VCR tapes, 8mm tapes or anything analog as far as that goes. I am not to sure if I understand the "dropped frames" thing either.
Would some one suggest a capture card ? All I want to do is bring my digital movies in from my camcorder for making VCDs. I doubt I will make a movie large enough for a DVD.
P.S. If this is the wrong place for this post, where?

I am running XP Home SP1.
Intel 2.0 GHz
1.5 GB SDRAM 133
ATi 9600 XT
2 HDs totaling 120 GB
Thought maybe what I wanted to install a capture in would help.

It is my understanding that you only need a capture card
if you want transfer film from an analog device to the pc.
If you have a digital camera, you should be able to
install the accompanying software on your machine and be
done with it. You can then copy the movie-file on your
computer.
I hope this helps a little.
I also suggest you go to the website of the brand from
your camcorder. There you should also be able to find
some form of support for your question.
Good luck.

This is not my field exactly but... what you should be able to use is any
1394 port on a computer and your camera's computer driver. Once the driver
is installed XP (or whatever) should "see" your camera as an image device.
My still camera worked this way. Then the film strips on your digital media
should be displayed as downloadable items.

Jarod gave good advice as it is best to see what your camcorder mfg says
that you need to trasfer video to your computer. You will also need
software to process your raw video (edit, transitions, etc.). If you have
XP then possibly the updated Movie Maker may be able to provide some tools.
I'm not sure if its output fine is compatable with creating a VCD/SVCD.

Anyway, good luck!
