new XP to old 98 -- familiar project, new question

The question has been posed here many times, and the advice has been
generous: "How do I get my new XP computer networked to my old 98 to
transfer files?" Like other users, I'm doing this as a one-shot deal;
I just want to get some data from my old PC into my new one.

I'll be using a crossover cable to link up the two Ethernet cards.
I'll run the wizards, tinker with TCP/IP, disable the XP firewall,
etc. However, there's one angle I've yet to see addressed: What
happens when I'm done? Because that's when I'll want my Ethernet card
to resume its current and most important job -- getting me on the
Internet via my cable modem.

Will it be a simple matter of retracing my tracks and undoing changes
I've made to my XP settings? And what will those "new" settings (more
to the point, my existing settings) need to be? Is there something
more complicated that I'll need to be aware of?

I'm eager to set up a quick peer-to-peer share and retrieve my old
files. I'm leery, however, about toying with my Internet access,
unless I'm confident I'll get it back in the same speedy shape it is
now.

Thanks...

Is your XP network connection configured to obtain an IP address
automatically from your cable modem ISP? If so:

1. Configure 98 with the TCP/IP protocol, Client for Microsoft
Networks, and File and Printer Sharing.

2. The existing XP network settings should also work for transferring
files from the old 98 computer.

3. There's no need to run the wizards on either computer.

4. The only other thing that you might need to do is temporarily
disable firewalls to allow access between the computers.

Thanks, Steve! Worked like a charm. Got my files transfered and --
obviously -- am now back online.
