New XP machine won't talk to the printer on router

I have a SpeedSream SS2606 router with an HP2100 hooked up to the router's
printer port. This has worked well with two Win 98 PCs. I recently replaced
one of the 98 PCs with a new XP PC. The XP machine is working the internet
through the router, but I can't get the XP machine to print to the router
printer. How do I set up XP to use the Ethernet port for printing?

Have it browse the network for the printer throught the "add
hardware/printer wizard.

start/settings/printers and faxes/add printer
hit "NEXT" and select network printer..

It still has to detect the printers address via the router. Also make
sure your built in firewall in XP is turned off to make sure thats not
blocking anything until its set up.
 
I'm not 100% sure of this but i seem to remember that I had to add a port
(like LPT1) but it ended up being called IP_192.168.2.115 and was described
under properties as "Standard printer port"
Mind you this was in order to print to the printer's network card, not the
router's.
Hope I'm not muddying the waters.

Either way, you still must find the printer. Your routers IP address
is probably 192.168.1.1 which is common.

Its the same concept as your previous network just a different address
so therefore you have to invoke a search for it again. I am sure you
have your drivers installed as well?

You could install the LPT port as you described.. I thought I would
lead you to the wizard which may have been easier, but whatever works
in the long run

Of course, the first action is to install the printer driver on the new
XP. Usually, that allows XP to find the networked printer during the
installation when the user is presented with the Browse for networked
printer button by the Add Printer wizard. If the driver is not
installed, there is no finding the printer on the network, AFIK.
