Newly installed XP pro. Decided I'd just dl Messenger 6.1 and install as
already new the "old" Windows messenger wouldn't work any longer.

Now seem to have two "copies" of a Messenger, obviously the old and the new.

For now, I've renamed the original Messenger's exe file to prevent it from
starting when I start OE. I've also just now noticed M6.1 will exit even
though I'm still using
OE. I suspect OE won't do it's automatic thing regarding Messenger either.

Any advice should I just leave well enough alone or should I remove
Messenger via Add/Remove Windows Components?

You can remove windows messenger if you want but bear in
mind that remote assitance, application sharing and
whiteboard won't work in MSN messenger if you do.

Best thing to do is disable it.

Heres how.

1) Start> Run
2) type services.msc
3) Find windows messenger in list
4) right click and select stop
5) close window
6) Start> Run
7) type msconfig
8) under startup, unclick any lines that refer to windows
messenger. You can tell the difference between the 2
messengers by the command part. Msn messenger will be
c:\program files\messenger.

This will then stop it loading at next boot.

If you want to un-install it then

1) Start> Run
2) copy and paste the following without the speech
marks "RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%
\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove"

HELP
I have just seen yr post and realized that Ra won't work it i remove Win
mess frm XP which i have !

How can i get ti bak?

You can either add it again by going to control panel
add/remove programs, on the left you'll see windows
components. Click that. At the bottom of that list is
messenger.

The other way is to download it from the web.
