Just did a full format of hardrive and installed xp on top
of windows 98. Now that xp is installed, no matter what
cd i read, i recieve "E:\ is not a valid win32
application". According to the cd drive its xp compatible.

Hello

That's not a full Install your installing an OS on top of
another OS doing a full install means whipping the drive
clean and then just installing one OS, sounds lke you some
corrupted files which relates toyour cdrom

.
i whiped my hardrive. Then installed windows 98 then
upgraded to windows xp pro. my cd must have been working
when 98 was installed or else xp would not have been able
to install. Since both 98 and xp upgrade are original
disks i don't see why i am recieving cd-rw problems once
xp is installed.

Hi Adam -

There's no need to install Windows 98 prior to a clean install of Windows
XP. If you have the Upgrade Edition of Windows XP Pro you'll be asked
during the installation process to insert your Windows 98 CD for
verification that you're eligible to use the upgrade edition.

Ideally you should set your first boot device to your CD-ROM and perform a
clean install. When the installer detects your existing XP installation,
choose the option to delete the partition and reformat it clean. The
install will then proceed much as it has with your previous upgrade from 98.

Did you have any CD Burner software already installed.
If so remove it, THEN do the upgrade.
Get latest version of CD Burner software
e.g. easy CD 5 or later Nero 5.5 or later.
