New workstation - Folder re-direction not working

I bought a new computer from Dell, and joined it up to the domain. It
is running XP.

When I log in using my domain account, my folder re-direction (My
Documents etc) is not working. However, when the intern logs in, she
gets her folders re-directed just fine. I am a Domain Admin, she is
not.

I have no idea what could be happening - any ideas?

Hello Mike,
Run command line based gpresult logged on as user to ensure the policy is
applied, ensure correct permission is in place at the share, and the user in
question should be owner of the redirected location if it exist.

Mike,

In addition to what Chriss suggested ( Hello, Chris! ) I would like to ask
you what happens if you log on once ( it fails ). We know this. But what
happens if you log off and then back on? Does it work? I bet it does!

Let us know if this scenario is what you experience.....

It turns out that Chris was right. I did try logging out, then back in
(several times), but once I looked at the ownership of the folders, I
realized that Administrator was the owner. I re-assigned to me, and
viola! It Worked! How odd for AD to be this picky.

Thank you very much Chris!

Cary,

I am seeing this scenario with folder redirection. First login fails, second
succeeds. Not all accounts are affected. Do you have a insight?

Andy.

Andy,

Maybe. There is something that WINXP does that causes problems with a lot
of things, logon scripts, GPOs, etc. etc. etc. This 'something' is called
Fast Logon Optimization. Before I was aware of it a couple of years back it
causes a lot of confusion for the WINXP Pro users.

Anyway, take a look at the following MSKB Article:

Thanks, another interesting article to digest. We are having tons of
problems at the moment, FRS replication is failing, Group policies are
poorly, AD, Security, time service, Kerberos and it goes on. 9 Server 5 DC's
650 Clients, 1600 users. All working fine at the end of the last school
year, all not working fine right now. Arrrgh. There are times when I like
working in IT, now isn't one of those!

Andy.

Andy,

Take a look at DNS. This could be a contributing factor to a lot of your
problems. Make sure that all computers are pointing ONLY to your internal
DNS Server(s) and that the IP Address of your ISP's DNS Server(s) appear in
only one spot - in the Forwarders tab in the DNS MMC! How do your clients
get their DHCP lease? via a WIN2000 DHCP Server or from some network
hardware device ( such as a Firewall or Router )?

If DNS is not working well then you will have a ton of problems. Make sure
that you have all four of the subfolders ( the _msdcs, _tcp, _udp and
_sites ) and that they are all populated accordingly. You might want to
take a look at nslookup as well as dnslint to help you with the
troubleshooting there. I would work on that first and foremost.

To look at the FRS problems you want to take a look at frsdiag first and
then possibly sonar and/or ultrasound.

The GPOs will not work if DNS and / or FRS are not working properly.
Remember that GPOs are comprised of two parts: the GPT and the GPC. The
Group Policy Template is the part that needs FRS and the Group Policy
Container is the part that needs DNS ( as it lives in AD.......thus, it need
replication, which needs DNS to be inorder! ). What happens if you create a
test user on DC01? Does it ever show up on DC02? And what happens in you
put a small .txt file in the SYSVOL shared folder on DC01? Does it show up
in the SYSVOL shared folder on DC02? What happens if you do a 'net share'
at a command prompt on each DC? What do you see?

You definitely want to make sure that time is synched up as kerberos
requires, by default, that all computers be within five minutes of each
other. Otherwise you will have kerberos problems....

Andy,

Not thinking straight!

First and foremost install the WIN2000 Support Tools on all of your DCs (
better from the Service Pack 4 CD or separate download than from the WIN2000
Server CD ) and run the following:

dcdiag /c /v >c:\dcdiagdcXX.log where c:\dcdiagdcXX.log is each Domain
Controller
netdiag /fix
netdiag /v >c:\netdiagdcXX.log
repadmin /showreps /v >c:\repadminrepsdcXX.log
repadmin /showconn >c:\repadminconndcXX.log
replmon

You might also want to install the Support Tools on a couple of workstations
and run the netdiag utility to see what pops up there....

Carly,

Thanks for the help. The support tools are an old friend of mine, however I
believe I have found the source of the problem with help from Solar Winds
Orion network monitor. One Allied Telesyn managed switch that was suffering
60% packet loss. This switch connected most of our servers together. I am
annoyed at myself for focussing too tightly on Windows server issues and not
checking the LAN beyond simple pings.

Purchasing some network management / monitoring software is at the top of my
list. Not sure we can afford the $14,000 for the full Orion software. Does
MOM offer any network performance management?

New switch going in Thursday morning, I will post back here tomorrow in case
anyone is interested!

Cheersm

Andy.

New switch not arrived yet so a plain vanilla Dlink 10/100 is filling in. No
packet loss recorded today, the event logs are spookily empty. Just a
comment on dcdiag and netdiag, when we were experiencing issues these tests
passed on everything but the fact that there were replication errors in the
event log.
