The problem could simply be your machine (i.e. too old/slow). I'd
downgrade to win95, or install 98lite "sleek" version, which is win98 with
the win95 shell. All you need are three system files from win95, which I
can email you if you like.

A 233 with 64MB is perfectly suitable for Windows-98. In fact, for a
couple years, I was running 98 on a Pentium-166 with 64MB RAM (then
later a P200 with 64 and eventually 96MB) with no problems.

However, I do second the recommendation for running 98-Lite. Even on my
current workstation (an ASUS A7N8X Deluxe with an Athlon 2500 Barton and
512MB RAM), I went ahead and installed 98-Lite on her Windows side. Not
only does it increase performance (speedwise), it also makes 98 more
stable. After IE was eradicated, crashes were fewer and far between.

Just reclaimed an old AMD-K6 233MHz machine with 64 MB RAM. I loaded up
the old Win98 that came with it and hung it on the LAN. I upgraded from
IE4 to IE6 (SP1) and ran Windows update. Installed all the critical
updates except ActiveX 9 and then went back and Installed the ActiveX 9
patch. I rebooted to get the rest of the updates and when IE6 tried to
open up Microsoft's website, the system rebooted -- no error, no warning
just black screen --> POST....

I've uninstalled IE6, reinstalled it, looked for some way to uninstall
the ActiveX patch (assuming that's what it is), and scoured Google for
answers or even a copy of IE5 to try. Is there a fix for this? I am
alble to use Netscape 7.1 just fine, but I would really like to patch up
this copy of Win98.

Any help?

Thanks.

IE6.x is a piece of shit !!!!

Never install anything above the highest 5.x version.

I'd reformat and start over. Inastall the default IE 5.x that comes
with ein98se. Then upgrade to the highest 5.x version they have
online.

IE 6 may not be suitable. If you want to try a copy of IE 5 or 5.5, look
here:

Hope this helps you. Best, JG

Thanks for the tip Jeff. I uninstalled ver. 6, installed ver. 5 and it
didn't fix it. I disabled all the ActiveX stuff and that didn't fix it
either.

I can load up www.msn.com or www.googl.com, but I can't load
windowsupdate.microsoft.com or even cartoonnetwork.com without the
machine resetting.

I don't know.

Thanks anyway.

Okay, I ditched IE6 and installed 5.5(sp2). It didn't fix it. I
disabled all the ActiveX stuff and that didn't fix it either. Dumping
the partition and starting over is not out of the question, but I'd
rather fix this one if I can.

I'm a bit flummoxed.

Thanks.

Nah, the machine I salvaged the second HD and monitor from was a Dell
P100 that ran Win98 slowly but fine.

Something happened after I installed a patch -- most likely the ActiveX
patch since I couldn't access the update site after I installed that one.

I'm thinking reinstall over the existing setup.

I agree that the machine is spec'd okay. I don't know anything about
98-lite, but I think I've downloaded a demo version. I will install it
later, but for now I'm looking at this silly crashing thing.

It didn't happen until I installed that ActiveX patch. I'd like to try
backing that patch out. The only way to do that may be to reinstall
over the existing OS. Then I can play with 98-Lite.

Thanks.

Reinstalled over the existing system. It didn't change anything except
the IE crash problem which it fixed. I patched again choosing not to
install IE6 (IE5.5(SP2) is current on the system).

On to other things.

Thanks to everyone for thier input.
