I have a brand new install of Win2000 Server. Everything is great until I open Internet Explorer 5.0 and try to connect to any web site. It takes about five minutes to open www.google.com. Most other sites time out. Transfers between this computer and others on the network are very fast.
I can access the IIS 5.0 web site on the Win2000 server with no problems.

1 NIC
5 static IP addresses on aDSL connection.
Using ISP's gateway address.
Using ISP's DNS server.

It's been driving me crazy for a week. I'm ready to punt the server. Any ideas?

How about http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com
If you're using IE 5.0, you might just be missing a few updates.

Install DNS on your server and let it point to your server-IP. Also, put in a second nic and attach that to your ADSL-connection.
DNS on your servernic(s) should *only* point to your server-IP. The ISP-DNS-numbers should be set in tab Forwarders of DNS-server.

Marina,
Many thanks for your reply. I'm not quite sure what you mean by "install DNS on your server and let it point to your server-IP." Do you mean, add an A rec, or an SOA, or a NS? Can you describe what the hang-up is inside my box? I am very interested in learning what is actually going wrong in the operating system. Thanks

Do you have DNS-server installed on your server?
On your servernic(s) in the DNS-field point to your server-IP (because the server is running DNS, right?).
Is your AD-domainname the same as your websitename? If not, good, than you won't have to add an A-record in DNS.

I suggested updates because you stated you're using IE 5.0 which is not the
current browser. It begs the question, "What else is not updated?" Have
you applied the latest service pack, critical/recommended updates and if
you're using an OEM system, any required OEM drivers following Windows
updates?

You obviously have a DSL modem but you do not state if you have a router.
From your original post, it appears you do not.

Is the cable modem attached directly to the server and are you trying to
route the workstations through the server? It does not sound like you are
routing through the server since you state you are using "5 static IP
addresses..., Using ISP's gateway address..." but it does sound like a
router is not present.

If you do not have a router and not routing through the server and you are
using public IP addresses, then you do not need DNS on your server, although
AD is another story.

If you do have a router and a private network, then you should have DNS on
the server, no root entry "." in the forward lookup, and your network
settings on all computers should point to your local server. If you run
DHCP you can put everything in there and let the workstations obtain their
addressing automatically.

You do not need a forwarder setup in your server's DNS. Without the root
entry "." in the forward lookup, the server will use the root hint servers.
You should only put local addressing in your DNS unless you're running AD
and your private and public domains are the same and you're hosting your web
server off site. Then you would need to add an address 'www' and internal
users would have to browse to www.domain.com to get to the external web
site.
