New Vista Update

I downloaded and installed a new Vista Update yesterday from the Windows
Update site but I have no idea what it did. Does anyone else know about
this update. Thanks in advance for the feedback. (I still cannot
believe the speed of the Internet for me with Vista --- it just flies
and does not seem to have hardly any timeout issues at least for me with
Comcast Cable.)
 
In your Windowsupdate options, choose to "notify but not install ". Then
when it says " updates are ready", click the "what does it do link" to
see if it applies to you / how big it is, etc.

The Windows Defender item was a "definition update", expect those
routinely.

At this time there is also a Security update for Office 2003 available,
as well as an _optional_ update for RC1.

You can control how updates are received. Click CONTROL PANEL|WINDOWS
UPDATE|CHANGE SETTINGS.
 
My d/l update history shows 2 for 9/21 - a Windows Defender (KB915597)
update and an ''optional'' update (925028)
"Install this update to prevent an issue where selecting text in Microsoft
Word 2003 on a Tablet PC may cause the application to become unresponsive
when you are using Vista RC1."

Start - All Programs - Windows Update - View Update History (left side of
panel) - then Google the update number

Go into Control Panel | Windows Update | Update History, right click on the
update and View details.

That update caused my system to BSOD on the reboot needed to complete the
install, restore points were deleted, it took over a minute longer to boot,
and 30 seconds more from the welcome screen to the desktop. I removed the
update, and after a few more reboots it's back to it's normal snappy
startup and shutdown. I bugged it.

It might not be the update itself but the fact that when I told it to
install the update I had other programs open, working in them. After it
finished and asked for a reboot I closed all open apps and told it to go
ahead. I know better than to do that. Normally I will have everything
closed when I let an update happen. Still it shouldn't happen.

Did it continually BSOD on reboot Rock?. If so how did you 'get in' to
Vista to remove the update in question?.

No, on restart it gave a message that Vistas did not end normally and gave
the usual options what that happen such as safe mode and normal startup. I
chose to start normally. It took much longer, over a minute longer, to get
to the Welcome Screen and 30 seconds longer from there to the desktop. Once
at the desktop it was slooooooooow. I uninstalled the update, ran chkdsk,
and , rebooted. After a couple of reboots is seemed back to normal with the
same fast startup and logon. I did bug it.

Interesting -- no issues here except I had to call Microsoft to assure
them I was only installing Vista on one computer
 
You need to keep in mind that there may be a driver change in the Windows
update, since that is what happened to me. Since I did not know what
Windows was updating, it downloaded and installed a driver for my modem,
which caused a blue screen on the next boot.

I now have my updates set so it will ask me if I want them installed. This
helps me keep track of exactly what is being updated.
