New Virus?

I have started getting the old SVCHOST.EXE error message again which
surfaced some weeks ago with the MBLAST virus. At that time and even now
there was/is no sign of MBLAST. Norton Anti virus has also failed to show
anything.
All the "SYMPTOMS" are identical to the ones I got at the last "mild"
infection.

Is there some thing that I can look out for manually? say with Regedit or
through explorer?

On that particular computer - I need to install the latest WIN2000 SP and
then I better get on to installing the Vulnerability patch.

But I do hope to hear if there is a new virus about.

Thanks,

Read thru all of these posts or better yet, do a search and use keywords
like virus, or worm, or trojan, oer W32.Blaster.Worm, or Welchia, adn after
do a search in Google for some of the common words you have and that you see
in the search in this NG. It's like the "teach a man to fish" deal.

It's probably a bug.

Greetings,

There have been reports that the original patch
didn't "take" on some systems.

You should certainly be on SP4 and download the -039 patch
as suggested by both of the previous posters.
Also, go to grc.com and choose "Shields Up!" - there
you'll find a test called "DCOMbobulator" which will check
that you ARE patched properly, in case you're one of those
whose system hasn't "taken".

I have used this to check my system (W2k Pro SP4 with
patch MS03-039) without problems.

Kindest regards,

James
