The MS download site now shows the "date published" as 1/20/2006. But it
still shows the latest version number as 1.0.701. What gives? Can anyone
clear this up. Is there really a new version or has MS re-written history?

Just download it on a machine that has never been online before and
installed it, still the same build. I would expect the net build to be
Windows Defender, but who knows

Also after I downloaded the file the sig still shows "Tuesday, November 15,
2005 7:19:16 PM" the day the last build was released

'sumthin broke.

I've seen one other report of this issue--apparently from a "calendar" site
which spots such changes in some automated fashion and flashed a notice
based on the date change.

I don't know what happened, but I imagine come working hours it might get
fixed.

Stop press notice:

OK - Donna Buenaventura has better information on this one: According to
here, the change is the inclusion of a newer definition version in the
download--as was past practice.

I haven't verified this, but it makes sense--I suspect it'll turn out to be
correct when I can try a clean install and see for myself.

The calendar was one original source of this alert, but they pulled the
entry and corrected it apparently--I never saw the original entry, so I
don't know what it said.

The front page is pretty nice--I'm surprised they aren't pushing
safety.live.com there too.

I think the push about security is a great idea--I wish that they had the
beta2 product out there to add to the excitement.

As Bill Sanderson says

"
open Windows Explorer--right-click Start, and choose Explore.

Navigate to \program files\Microsoft Antispyware--i.e. the folder in which
Microsoft Antispyware was installed--for many, this will be C:\Program
Files, Microsoft Antispyware.

In this folder, double click on: \program files\microsoft
antispyware\gcasSWUpdater.exe

Look for an icon which looks like a satellite dish.

This should, perhaps after a pause--initiate a popup from Microsoft
Antispyware offering you an auto-download of an updated version. Accept
this offer, and allow the update to install.
"
I tryed and it works

I tried doing that but no pop up came up. I could see that something tried in
the background, so I am wondering if my pop up protection is keeping the pop
up from showing, thus keeping me from downloading the update. Or should we
just wait and update it when we do our automatic update?

Do you have a software firewall that might be blocking?

As an alternative, deleting
\program files\microsoft antispyware

and all subfolders
(after shutting down Microsoft Antispyware)
, followed by reinstalling--has worked for others.

Here's a follow-up. As of today (1/25/06), the MS download site has changed
the "date published" back to 11/21/2005. So, I guess Microsoft has restore
history. Doesn't enhance my confidence and trust in them.

In any organization, people make mistakes, and the mistakes are
corrected--very carefully..

Come on you guys - lighten up and look on the humorous side of things. MS was
just winding you up - testing your vigilance and desire to be among the first
to download and place a post in the Announcements newsgroup that Windows
Antispyware beta2 is here!! Judging by the number of threads the subject has
generated, they were very successful. Certainly got the bees buzzing ;) In
any event. If one had read on, I`m sure the download page would have gone on
to announce the new Beta by encouraging people to download and try .... blah
blah blah
