new users unread mail messgaes

i have just re-installed xp and have set up two new limited user accounts for
my wife and son, including setting them up with their own email. At the
welcoming page these user accounts have the message '1 unread message' even
though there are no unread messages in any of the folders in their email
accounts...how do i get rid of this?

The easiest way is to use TweakUI to turn off the notification.

thanks for that although it's not entirely satisfactory! for a start i'd like
to know why it is erroneously displaying the unread email thing; also, i
would actually like it to be activated so i can see the unread emails from
the welcome screen...it's just that i'd like it to be accurate!
