After having happily shackled myself to Win98, following the standard
progress from 3.1 thru 95, I expect to receive a new computer in a few
days with XP installed. I must admit to some trepidation.

However, my immediate concern is with my wireless network I have
installed to share dsl usage with my wife's computer. Will XP recognize
the network when I plug in my cable from the router? Or will I have to
do a re-installation?

Another question has occurred as I read this ng. I have used Avast for
quite some time and am happy with it. Are there problems with
uninstalling the Norton AV that will come with my computer--from Dell, btw.

Finally, how steep should I expect the relearning curve to be from 98 to
XP, considering my previous experience with various Windows and an
occasional foray into the world of Linux.

Thanks for any and all assistance.

p.s. Is there any protocol for this ng about top-posting or bottom posting?

XP should recognize your network, with no issues. The only thing you'll need to do is configure the machine name and Workgroup name, to your liking. By default XP uses DHCP and obtains all its settings automatically. If you're using static IP addressing for your LAN, then you'll have to configure it manually, but its the same as Win98.

Norton products are well known for difficulties in removing them. Norton has published articles on how to completely, manually, remove some of their products. Hopefully the version of NAV and other Norton software, you get is among them.

I missed that one... I had Microns in 3.1 days and they were built
like tanks. I finally upgraded because so many sites were not
compatible with 3.1 and besides... I only had a 13.3 modem when the
world had changed to 56K. It was brutal.

I hear Long Horn is beathing down our necks now.

Apparently XP does all the work for you. We had a Win98 when we set
up the cable (with a wireless router) and didn't do anything special
when we switched over to the XP. Yes, I was shocked.

I told my husband to check "none" for virus protection when he put in
the XP order because I was going to use either e-trust or avast. He
ordered McAfee, which I deleted immediatly through Add/Remove. If
he's ordered Norton, I would have used it for the (free) duration.

Don't worry, it's not as bad as you may think... they made the switch
easy for you by providing a "classic interface" option which *I think*
is on your Start Menu (otherwise go to Start > Settings > Display....
windows and buttons). Do that immediately and you will be more
comfortable.

Minor, but nagging problems will fix themselves when you reboot. So
when feel yourself getting frustrated because something isn't working
the way it should: reboot.
Thanks for any and all assistance.

It depends on how tolerant the respondant is of syles other than
his/her own and the degree of social skills the respondent has.... for
the most part, this ng seems to be accept all posting styles and has
the ability to focus on the real problem at hand.

Thanks for the responses. I'll print them out for future reference. I do
find that Norton offers a way to uninstall it AV program if Add/Remove
fails. Glad to hear about the "classic" interface.
Having been around PCs since the days of the IBM PCjr, rebooting when
all else fails is second nature to me. As is bottom posting. Folks on
various BBSs taught me that.

Glad it's friendly over here, cause I'm sure I'll be back.
