I have same problem. Had it working and then stopped. Do they want server
name osuch as Work or (e-mail address removed)
Do they want my server providers passowrd

This is my first post. Gary, you seem to know what you are talking about so I
decided to ask you how to get this username/password requirement to Window's
Mail turned off.
The same thing is happening to me as to the others and the error message I'm
getting is pasted below.
By the way I already tried the fix you suggested below about going to tools,
accounts, properties, and then unclicking the two boxes. It didn't change
anything for me. Please help? BTW, I'm running Spy Sweeper on Vista. Thanks
for anything you or anyone else can think of. Robin

Account: 'pup3', Server: 'smallpaw.startlogic.com', Protocol: POP3, Server
Response: '-ERR Login failed.', Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error:
0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC92

Actually, I do not advocate unchecking two boxes for this problem.
Different problems have different fixes.

If you are sure you are you are entering the correct username and
password, one possible cause for that error is account corruption.
One thing you should try as a quick fix is to delete that corrupted
mail account, restart Windows Mail, then recreate that account.

If that doesn't fix it, more drastic measures will have to be taken.
Which antivirus are you running?
As a minimum, email scanning in the antivirus must be turned off,
although that may not be sufficient to eliminate all bad effects.
In a worst case scenario, your antivirus may need to be uninstalled.

If turning off the email scanning function does not resolve your problem,
consider upgrading to Windows Live Mail, because it is less prone to
suffering bad effects from overly aggressive antivirus programs.

If you are not running any antivirus, Spy Sweeper has been known to cause
problems with Windows Mail also.

If you get repeated requests to enter the username and password for your
mail server, click Cancel on that prompt, then right-click on the resulting
error message, copy, then paste it into a reply here.
We can't do much troubleshooting without the complete error message.

Thanks so much Gary.
The problem I'm having is that I can't find out what my user name and
password actually IS.
Yes, I'm the administrator and the only one using my computer. I've tried
every possible user name and password I've ever used and none work. I don't
remember ever assigning a password to Window's Mail or to my computer in
general.
Is there a way to recover your password and user name without re-assigning
one, which wipes out the whole last email account, I understand.
I also use E-preserver to copy and move hundreds of emails each week over to
Window's Mail from AOL, so it doesn't clog up my AOL account.
I know! I know! I hate AOL too, but thousands of animal rescue members know
how to find me at that account that is now 11 years old.
I also need to keep the current account on Window's Mail to store old emails
for our animal rescue organization, so I can't delete that account and start
over. I only wish I could!
Below this is the error message I'm getting. This only started a few days
ago! ARGH. Any help you can give is greatly appreciated.

I'm using Spy Sweeper anti virus. The email scanning function is already in
the off position. Haven't ever had a problem with it before. It seems many
people are having this same problem that I am having and we can't all be
using Spy Sweeper. I hope I am explaining this right!

E preserver doesnt support Live Windows Update I dont think! ARGH!

Windows Mail does not have a username or password. Those
credentials are associated with your mailbox on the mail server.
The only entity that can retrieve or reset those items is the tech support
personnel of your mail provider.

I know I'm not explaining this correctly by your answers! It's not you! It's
me!
This is the problem. I have tried the user name that I use for my AOL
account, and the password. I tried it both WITH the "@aol" and without it,
for the user name.
None of that is working.
I KNOW it is the correct password as I travel some and sometimes have to
sign on to strange computers ("don't know them: strange, not "wierd strange")
and that user name and password signs me on.
I think that's what others are saying too. They are trying their email
server's user name and password to get logged on to Windows Mail and it's not
working.
Now, this is something I should have told you sooner and just now realized
it. Yes, as you may have guessed I am blonde.
Ok, depite the login window coming up now on Windows Mail, I can click
cancel and it will come up again. After three times of clicking cancel, my
Windows Mail DOES come up and the login window and error message goes away.
I'm just wanting to get rid of that blasted log in window in the first
place! I didn't ask for it. I didn't buy it, and I want it to go back to the
rock it crawled out of, please!
Anyway to do that? Got any rock crawlin' magic in your pocket there? Thanks
Gary! Robin

Robin, reading between the lines, I gather that you have set up an AOL
mail account in your Windows Mail program, or at least tried to.
Be sure to follow AOL's directions for doing so:
http://postmaster.aol.com/imap/express.html

Those directions were written for Outlook Express, but the same
settings will work in Windows Mail.

If after implementing those directions you still get an error message,
right-click on your error message, copy, then paste it into a reply here.
We can't do much troubleshooting without the complete error message.

Hi Gary,
Thanks again for responding! No, I haven't set up AOL e-mail account on
Windows Mail. The reason I have AOL mail on Window's Mail is only for
storage. It's not set up through AOL.
I have a program called E-preserver which saves and transfers all of your
AOL mail, personal filing cabinet, address book and favorite places to
Window's Mail.
For a year I've had no issues or problems. Then about a week ago that log in
window started popping up, the one everyone is asking about, asking for a
user name and password, and none that I use will work.
Again the error message is:
< Account: 'Robin', Server: 'smallpaw.startlogic.com', Protocol: POP3,
Server Response: '-ERR Login failed.', Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Server
Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC92>

Thanks again, Robin

Email scanning in any antivirus must be disabled, for reasons
explained here:

i am having the same problem and i am using q/qwest mail it keeps asking me
for my user name and password and i keep typing them in and it keeps asking

Did it ever work? If I'm not mistaken, the q.com accounts have webmail
access only. Check with Qwest and ask if you are supposed to have POP access.

here is mine:

Account: 'Q Mail', Server: 'pop3.live.com', Protocol: POP3, Server
Response: '-ERR authentication failed', Port: 995, Secure(SSL): Yes, Server
Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC92
