I had a friend's friend build my computer. He installed Windows XP
Professional. I was able to use my computer just fine, until a few months
ago. When I turn on my computer, a message comes on saying that my system may
be at risk and that I need to update the system. I asked my friend what this
meant and he said that when the guy set the computer up he used his Windows
XP download in my computer and that I could still use my computer but would
be unable to download any Windows updates. I don't know how or what to do to
get my Windows XP updated. Could you please help and explain in very
elementry language as I am not too computer savy.
Thank You.

1-take credit card
2-go to computer store

4-install from CD

Basically, what it comes down to, is you have an illegal Windows install.
You need to purchase a legit copy for your PC, and I would stay away from
your friend's friend for PC service in the future.

When you purchase the WinXP Pro, then visit here:-
see for instructions
www.microsoft.com/genuine/selfhelp/pkuinstructions.aspx
The Key Update Tool will attempt an automatic internet activation but it that's not
possible, the key will be changed regardless and you'll have to telephone to
activate.
The Genuine Advantage Product Key Update Tool is only valid for users attempting to
change their current non-genuine Product Key to a genuine COA sticker or genuine
Product Key – all without a reinstall!
