Was hoping to backup everything onto this NEW USB 2.0 120GB WD drive. XP (sp1a) sees it and recognizes it as USB Mass storage device. It also shows up in device manager. It does NOT show up in explorer OR Disk Manager. So I cannot format it or partition it or do anything useful with it. Same USB port works fine for USB2 Nomad device. Did I buy a piece of garbage?

You might need to install the drive internally and format
it, then put it back in the external case.

I just last month purchased a WDXU1200 which is an external USB drive.
It came preformatted in FAT32, which is just fine for me for back ups.
I
just plugged it in and it worked. However Western Digital services
these
items and they gave me this number 1-800-832-4778. This would be
your best bet for help on this issue. I sure wouldn't format the
drive
until I spoke with WD.
