New USB card

I finally got around to putting a USB2 card into my old Cyrix running
Windows 98 but because the USB 1.1 card is onboard the motherboard everytime
I try to install drivers for the new one the system freezes (I'm guessing
it's a conflict between the two because when I remove and try to reinstall
the old drivers with both cards present the system freezes - I can only
reinstall the drivers for the old USB successfully when I have removed the
new USB2 from the motherboard).
Any guesses what I am doing wrong, or if there is a way to get the computer
to ignor/disable the onboard USB?

Thanks for any help.

Shane.

Without much information to go on here I can only guess that you might look in
the
BIOS to see if you can disable the USB there and if the USB add in card can
then handle things on its own.

you might want to update the bios of your motherboard.

You may have to disable onboard USB in BIOS. I'm assuming this new USB
adapter will work with Win98? Some require win98SE.

Could there be a separate USB filter driver that has to be installed?
I don't even know if it would apply to a plug-in card.

You could disable the onboard USB ports from the BIOS and also remove
the USB stuff from the Device Manager after you boot into Safe Mode.
But even after I did the latter to install a new video card, the old
video drivers still gave me problems until I manually moved them to a
different folder and erased references to them in the registry (I
backed up windows.dat and user.dat first). OTOH I still can't get rid
of my VIA bus mastering IDE drivers, despite my mobo not having any
VIA chips on it.

If the USB2 card uses an ALi chip (64 leads), I don't think its driver
will
install with Win98, only Win98SE or later, at least the USB 2 portion
won't.

Sorry, I do have Win98SE otherwise I wouldn't be trying to install it. I did
manage to disable the onboard card through the CMOS and remove it from the
Device Manager.
It still won't install though. When the wizard goes to install new hardware
it only shows the old USB.INF driver which when I try to install freezes the
computer. And doesn't accept that the WIN98SE driver I got with the card is
compatible. I tried 'tricking' the wizard by changing the name of my new
driver to the name it wants to install which didn't freeze the computer but
the card didn't work and was missing a couple of devices in the Device
Manager.
Is it like Larry said and I have to manually remove all the old drivers from
the INF directory and from the registry, but I'm still stuck with the
problem of the wizard not conceding that the driver that comes with the new
USB2 being compatible with the card.

Any ideas?

Cheers,

Shane.

Hi Shane!

How did you previously physically connect a USB periphery device to the
onboard 1.0 USB? Didn't you need an external USB Bracket with 2 or more USP
ports, and a flat ribbon connection to the board?

Prior to installing my new PCI 2.0 USB card, I unplugged the short flat
ribbon cable running from the motherboard to the old PCI 1.0 USB Bracket,
then removed the old 1.0 bracket, and in its place I installed the new PCI
2.0 USB card.

Worked perfectly.
