So, I set up a wireless LAN for a guy in his home: He and his wife
wanted to share the internet connection.

Everything is set up correctly and working fine, but the lady's laptop
can't connect when she is in her office in the opposite end of the
house. They have a huge house, and it appears the signal won't reach
that far.

So what do we do to boost the signal up to her?

If there is a router/access point easiest thing is to move the
router/access point. If there is something big and metal between them,
like a refrigerator or screen door, that could be blocking the signal.
Might try a USB adapter on her laptop, as it can be moved for the best
reception easily. External antennas can help, but are limited on cable
length, and few laptop/pcmcia adapters have connectors for them. Is
she working on a metal desk? That could be a problem.

You can also get access points that will act like repeaters. Might
need to use one to increase coverage.

Bottom line is everything between the notebook and the access point
attenuates the signal to some degree. Metal can block it altogether.
Heavy building materials like concrete or brick attenuate it quite a
bit. Glass and air very little attenuation. That is why the indoor
range is so much less than the outdoor range
