New to Embedded, Simple Appliance

I am new to XP embedded and am building a simple file sharing device.

Motherboard, intel processor, gigabyte ethernet, ram, harddrives.

It is basically a pc that has a terribyte of storage and will be a central
media server. No need for monitor, keyboard, mouse, etc. But I do need to be
able to get at the machine to set up file shares.

Is there anywhere I can learn more about what I want to do?

What I am trying to accomplish is a Appliance. Basically building my own home
automation system. There will be three parts. The main appliance which runs
Embedded and has the automation software on it, the second is a tv server,
the third is a storage server. This is the one I am working on now. All pc's
as well as touch screens will use it to get media from. I wanted a small
footprint operating system that the end user does not have to play with.
Simply turn the power on, it boots, and away you go. There are products out
there that do this with embedded so I thought that is where I should start.

Maybe I haven't been clear. I basically want to build a Network attached
storage device. Processor, Moterboard, ram, Harddrives, and raid card.

From trying to learn about embedded everything shows how to run TAP to get
system info. But this machine has nothing loaded on it no cd drives, or
floppy drives. So where would I start?

Is it simply importing the inf files for the motherboard, and raid card then
using the NAS template?

Greg,

Sorry for late response. Have been quite busy last week and wasn't checking the newsgroup.

The answer to your question would be pretty formal. If you know a way how to install XP Pro on the target hardware you will know how
to get XPe running there.

Obviously you will need to open the box. Then you can either attach a CD-rom and have TAP launched from WinPE, or you can deal with
the HDD directly (e.g., install DOS and run TA).

If all you want is a network file server then check out Lacie and ther
Etherdisk product.

This runs XPe with a 25 user connection limit.
