Hi. I just had am Memorex CD/DVD installed in my
computer and was wondering if someone could answer
a couple of questions.
First, it seems it takes xp forever to access the drive when
I click on it in Explorer. (5 to 10 seconds.) Is this normal??
Second, do these blank CD-RW discs need to be formatted?
It appears that I'm able to burn files to a 'raw' disc with the
Nero 6 software that came with the drive but I'm unable to
drag and drop files from explorer. Xp says:
Cannot copy 'filename': files on the CD_ROM drive are read-only.
You cannot copy or move files to this CD-ROM Drive.
Also, even after burning files to it xp reports no disc space
available in the drive properties in My Computer
I want to use the CD for data backup purposes and at this
time I'm not very interested in burning audio.

Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks,
James

You need to install burning software that includes a packet writing
application as part of the burning package.

Try Roxio Easy Media creator (Latest version) - includes Drag-To-Disk module

Nero (Latest version) - Includes InCD module

InCD formated the disc but I still can't drag and drop. Xp gives
me the same error.

Beside the InCD module formatting the disk InCD needs to be running
constantly in the background. It has to be started with Windows - every
time. Check your options/preferences.

Yes, it takes the drive a few seconds to spin up. 30 seconds is time to
worry.

If packet writing (treating CDRW like floppy) aka UDF, yes. If doing a
single session, no.

You have to install that feature.

Oh, that's why xp was telling me I have files to be copied to
the cd. And I kept removing InCD it from starting.

Thanks
James

Xp is still telling me the drive is read only even though InCD is
running in the background. In MyComputer properties of the
drive's InCD tab it says that MRW Write Enabled is No.
Could this be it?
