"Director" is the HP's "Universal" product for controlling all of their
printers / scanners / All-in-One products.

From my perspective, the problem with director is that for professional
level scanning with higher-end scanners, director is pure junk compared
to the previous scanning software that came with high-end scanners (HP
PrecisionScan Pro).

You might be able to use the latest version of Director with any older
HP product; you might need to first install a low-level driver, which HP
has for most products (may or may not be Vista compatible).

I have IE7 installed and the Director that came with my 5590 worked as
it was supposed to. Which means that it still sucked, but it did work.
And my printer is a Photosmart 8250, and it's software is also
Director, and it also works fine. With XP and IE7. I did have a
problem until I installed a patch (don't remember which patch).

Canon has Vista compatible software for their scanners but I don't know
whether it's on the CD that is current in the retail box yet.
