I just bought a new computer except for a HDD
The specs are:

AMD Athlon 64 3700+
2Gb RAM DDR 400
Nvidia GeForce 6200

Bios says that IDE Master0 and IDE Master1 is HDD and CD-ROM (respectively).
When i boot it gives me the choices between Safe Mode, Safe Mode w/
Networking and General WIndows boot up. I choose the normal start up, the
blue screen for some hardware stuff flashes and the computer reboots. Dont
know how to fix it and would love to get this running asap. cant reformat
because i have some important files that i didn't back up on my HDD

In that List did you also buy a new Motherboard??
And you are trying to start your new system with the HD from the old
system....where all of the drivers are different??

Try doing a "repair" installation.........place XP CD in just as if you were
doing a new installation...skip the first prompt for a "recovery repair" and
continue on to the install menu.....XP should see the installation and then
ask if you wish to repair...say yes.
This will change drivers to match your present equipment but leave all of
your program and settings the same.

i tried that and repaired it successfully. but now it gets to the windows xp
loading screen. flashes the same blue hardware screen and reboots. any
suggestions?

Occasionally when changing a motherboard a repair install doesn't work. You
may need to do a format and clean install then restore your data from your
backup.

Being as you didn't back up, put a new hard drive in your machine and do
a clean install. Set the old drive's jumpers to slave, install it as a
second drive and move your data over to the new drive. Then you might
want to format the old drive and use it for back up.

You HDD installation is incapable of booting, because it cannot recognize
your new motherboard, new processor, and all other new hardware. I can't
imagine why you thought you could just put the old HDD and expect it to
work. I'll even bet it is an OEm version that came with the old computer....
At a minimum, you will have to perform a repair installation, but since it
is a new rig, it makes more sense to do a wipe and clean install.
You'll have to set the BIOS to boot from the CD, provided it is a retail
disk and not an OEM version, and boot from the CD. Follow the prompts....
