Hi all,

I changed two 64MB RAM modules for two 128MB modules.
Works fine, but ........
at startup it takes more than 3 (three !!) minutes between the moment the
background-picture appears and the moment that the icons appear and tat the
system is ready. What can I do to speed it all up?

PIII 1000MHz WIN XP PRO

TIA ferry

Check for memory errors before running windows anymore,

http://www.memtest.org/

Are you sure these modules are compatible?

Is the system otherwise sluggish or it is possible there is
some new problem unrelated to the memory like a problem with
the network, setting up connections or something related to
the user profile being loaded?

If you switch back to the old RAM does it run faster? This might be a
coincidence, or might just be a first run thing - perhaps windows is
re-configuring itself to load more system into RAM. I doubt this, but a
possibility. Worth switching back to the old modules as a control test.

Same problem with old RAM. Once started system runs fine.

Same problem with old RAM, even after several startups. Once started up no
problems.

Since old ram has same problem, it seems a windows, not ram
or hardware config issue. Regardless, I still suggest
running memtest86+ for a few hours to test it before
anything else.

Thanks, I will do so.

Download Bootvis
http://www.softpedia.com/progDownload/BootVis-Download-3465.html
and use that to reconfigure your boot sequence.

These how to's show how.
http://articles.techrepublic.com.com/5100-6346_11-5034622.html

Or use this
To use Bootvis download and install the program, then run it.

Go to the 'trace' menu and select 'next boot and driver delays.'
Bootvis will prompt to reboot. Reboot and wait for Bootvis to start again.

Go to the 'trace' menu and select 'optimize.' Reboot again. Wait for Bootvis
to complete its analysis.

Your boot times should now be optimized.

There is some talk that bootvis does not speed up boot times but it did for
me.

cheers

Daniel

Daniel,
I will try this one of these days, and let you all know how it worked out.
