I have just took a RAM chip out my comp after it failed through a Memtest
check and Im not quite sure what to replace it with. The sticker on it says
BT-DD266-256M-T003 PC2100 256MB.

I understand the 256mb and 2100 (just about) but when I did a search on Ebay
a few different ones came up, Im not quite sure of the difference between
DDR and whatever else there is.

I know to some it might be a dumb question but can anyone help?

eBay is not a good place to buy memory

Your motherboard uses standard memory, get a name-brand
budget grade PC3200 DIMM. Although your board only supports
DDR266 memory bus (unless hacked to go higher) the PC3200
memory is backwards compatible and will provide more of a
stability margin. Since your board only has 2 slots, if
you'll be using it for awhile you might consider getting
512MB instead of 256MB.

If you're not updated the bios you might consider it (prior
to replacing the memory, retest it), often bios updates
address memory compatibility, including ver. 1005 for that
board. I suggest the newest version instead.

Asus also (usually) has a list of tested memory modules per
board, though those might be harder to find at vendors.

I originally had two of the earlier mentioned ram modules installed but took
only one out so does this limit the type I can replace it with to run
alongside the other which I assume is the same.

DON'T buy RAM on Ebay!!!!

Here's probably what you have...

Watch the wrap.

Have a nice one...

No it does not limit you, you're still better off getting
PC3200.

Also, I have that board, which I did hack to enable higher
FSB & Mem, and noted that it is not stable very far above
133MHz (DDR266) with more than one memory slot filled. 1 x
512MB module was more stable than 2 x 256MB modules.
Whether this applies to your use I dont' know, but in
general I'm inclined to think *any* memory would be more
likley stable as a single DIMM in that board.

Also when you say a name brand which ones in particular would be a good
start?

Corsair, Kingston, etc.
An alternate strategy is to buy from someplace with a good
return policy, like Crucial.com, or anything sold by Newegg
(probably cheaper) if you were in the US.

Thanks everyone thats all very useful advice and thanks for the links. I'll
let you know how I get on. Thanks again.
