New RAM Problems

I was running 1GB of Elxir 3200 400MHz RAM. I bought another gig of Kingston 3200/400MHz RAM. When the new modules are placed in slots 2 and 4 the main board does not show that the new RAM is in place. Yet if the new ram is in 1 and 3 it shows ok but the old ram (now in slots 2 and 4) does not show and machine sometimes does not start.

Machine runs XP PRO SP2


Any ideas what i need to do to remedy this problem.

Do you know what the motherboard is please? :)
 
I think it is a Gigabyte board with ati chipset, unfortunately i cant be more specific, pc is about a year old.
 
hi I got a gigabyte board with 4 memory slots
and what u explained there is exactly my problem too

i coulndt work out why this didnt work
from what i understood if u want to mqke best use of the dual data channel memory u ust be using EXACLTY the same type of memory otherwise it will not work

I even got the latest bios this didnt help me
so simple message is keep trying out different combinations play around with the order!
