New ram advice

maiden fan

I am planning on replacing my 1 gig of ram with another model as the ram
I have is cheap it cost less than £50 and as i'm haveing problems
already mentioned in another post I thought I would get better ones (
it might not help but I would rather have my husband buy me that for
xmas than a fat fryer!) I am looking at the cosair but am not sure if
it would be ok for my system I have a ABIT A17 GURU MOTHERBOARD AND A
INTELL PENTIUM 4 PRESCOTT PROSSECOR ALSO MAGNA 500W PSU AND 3 FANS
INSTALLED the ram I have been looking at is the -Corsair
(TWINX1024-3200C2PT) 1024MB (2 x 512MB Matched Pair), DDR400 /
PC3200... I have done some reading up and think it would be ok but
would like some advice.

unless it 's defective . you're wasting your money.

what type do you currently have?

what type does the MB support and how much?
 
I have not seen your other thread, but how do you know your memory chips are
defective? There are many sources for problems in a computer, and RAM is
just one of them.

Hi, i've had that meny problems with this computer hees a list
1 no sp2 it drives my computer nuts
2 locks up and hangs no known reason, playing a game (sims2) when on
the net even when just switched on.
3 goes into a reboot when playing said game.
4 lost my floppy drive, computer knows its there but when you put a
disk in it tells me to insert a disk?
5 seems to have trouble finding a certain file (sims2 downloads) when
you click on the folder the tourch starts waving about as if its
looking for it.
6 when I come out of outlook express it gives me an error report the
instruction at "0x77f536f9" referenced at "ox007f4dac" the memory could
not be "written"
7 both cd rom and rw cause the computer to lock up moxt of the time.
I clean my computer up every week, replaced the motherboard and psu the
thing is not even 1 yr old built to spec and no I can't send it back as
my husband destoyed the box it came in :mad:
I also had trouble with graphics card (radeon 9550) so got a geforce
6800xt still had a slight problem graphics breaking up so up dated the
driver but that made the reboots worse luckiely I had a restore point
to go back to, I make them every time I install something new in case.
I'm not grear when it comes to these things but it's the only thing
left I got a program from microsft for checking your ram but can't get
it to work it needs to go on a disk first and I can't get it to do
that.Ok thats it, maybe its nackered when I got it the hard drive broke
down after 5 months, paid somebody to fix it the reinstalled xp (what
i've already done) and charged me £60 but it did'nt solve the problem.
Sorry to be a pain.

I can't think of a better reason to replace RAM than Sims2 not working, and
an intransigent floppy drive.. if I were you, I would find myself a decent
and honest computer guy, and ask him nicely to re-install my system
completely..
 
None of those problems necessarily point to bad RAM. From your description,
I am of the impression that your computer knowledge is minimal - which is
not a criticism of you. Many of my friends and loved ones fit that category.
Anyway, your best bet, as MVP Mike Hall has already suggested, is to have
your system restored completely by a competent friend or good repair
facility.

Thanks to both for advice but were do I find someone reliable enough t
fix it even the big companies now a days have a habbit of ripping yo
off, I do know one thing I haven't used the company I bought this com
from since the day the trouble started

Of course it is up to you to find an honest and reliable repair source. This
is an adult world, and as adults we must be able to solve such problems.
Surely you can ask around in your city or town, and find a place where you
can get your system fixed without getting ripped off. Try your library, your
school or university, and computer clubs - and ask your friends and
neighbors.

I agree but I live in the highlands of scotland we have a small librar
and no uni or computer clubs actually we don't really have anything,
use the net for most things. I have come across a company on the ne
that can hopefully help, waiting a repliey

You may want to try re-installing your machine from scratch.. apply all
Windows updates directly after, then start loading your other programs..

I can understand the problems encountered due to your geographical
position.. maybe you should put a notice up in your locality re. starting a
self help computer club.. multiple heads are better than one..

Just out of interest, in what part of the Highlands are you located?

I live in Ross-Shire I did come across a place in the nearest town (it
got city status but is still a town) I sent a e_mail but no repliey
yet. I'll find some one I don't think i'm knowledgeable enough to strip
it down myself I can do the odd thing but thats to big a job. The thing
is that everytime I reinstall windows she runs ok for a while then
go'es loony tunes but theres only so many times I can and want to wipe
the drive and start again.
 
Maybe you need to educate yourself on computer maintenance and operating
systems. There are many good books on these two subjects. Try Amazon or
other online publication sellers, or use your search engine to find book
sources.

That I definatly agree on. I have some knowladge but not alot and I
have a habbit of questioning myself. I am going to get the Haynes
manual but havn't decided which to get the computer manual or the
computer troubleshooting the only thing I definatly know is that Haynes
are good manuals.(at least with cars) Either way once i've gaind some
knowledge I would bug people with stupid questions :)
 
I predict that you will become the neighborhood computer expert, and will
have lots of friends seeking your help.
