This morning a customer called, freaking out saying that all her documents,
desktop stuff, etc., was gone.
When I got there, I looked in the Documents & settings folder, thinking she
must have logged in wrong, or something like that.
What I found was a folder called 'username' that had all her stuff in it,
but another folder called 'username.computername' that was being used for
her profile.
This is a stand alone Win2k computer in a workgoup.
She said that when she came in there was a message that some of the updates
downloaded required a restart.
How/why would this happen?

User might have been playing with the 'Network Identification Wizard'. You
can navigate to;
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList
locate the new profile SID and edit the Reg_Expand_Sz 'ProfileImagePath' to
point back to the old profile.

I experienced a similar problem after the October 10 Update. In addition I
lost my email settings, contacts lists etc. I have not been able to recover
and was not playing with anything. This all happended after an automatic
update. I am not a technical user so an easy solution would be appreciated.

Sounds like the profile may be corrupt. If the profile is corrupt, you can
rename the profile(while logged on as local admin), then when the user logs
on again a new profile will be created from the image in \default user. You
can then copy over the items you need from the renamed profile. Copy the
folder contents not the folders themselves. When your sure you have all you
need, you can delete the renamed profile(s). Use the import function of your
e-mail software. Don't overwrite ntuser.dat

Hi all, we have the same problem with some win2k computers, all workstations
are
part of the domain. I could not find the reason why, the workaround I use
is to
locate the new profile SID in the registry and edit the ProfileImagePath to
point back to the old profile.

Did anybody find the reason why the profile recreated?

Thanks

I experienced the same problem after an Auto Update on October 9th. I found a
new profile username.HOME_PJRWWVB08A. I have noted this problem referenced in
a number of different posts but so far no reason given for the problem.

I tried to uninstall the OCtober 9th updates without any luck. tried to copy
all the folder contents from my old profile to the new one that was created
but could not get Outlook Express working under the new id (COuld not find
any IDnetity's) Ended up having to copy the folder to the Administrator id.
P.S> During this update I also seem to have lost all Outlook Expres Addres
books (unless I am looking for the wrong file type WAB)?

I would really like an easy answer to fix this up and the reason for the
problem. So far I have sen nothing from Microsoft acknowledging the problem.
I am not a technical user so fiddling in the registry really makes me nervous.

Did you try editing 'ProfileImagePath'?

There's nothing you can uninstall that would change the status of an
orphaned or corrupt profile.

You can't copy the OE stuff. You'll need to import it.
