I recently had a pc case fan failure. I replaced the fan and all should be
well, except....

I still get the dos bootup alert <Alert! Recent fan failure>

How do I make this disappear?

Check your computer's BIOS for a way to clear the alert - you state "DOS
bootup alert", this is not something Windows XP will do.

I stand corrected, ACE. It was an alert in the initial part of normal
bootup. Sorry!

I did go into the bios and tried to clear it out, but it still appears at
bootup.

No apologies neccesary.
What is the make and model of your computer's motherboard? Perhaps we can
locate the proper source of the alert.

The fan that I replaced had a heat sensor in it. The new fan that I
re-installed in its place did not. That's probably my problem source
(somewhere in the bios). I don't think the alert is going to go away until I
put the exact replacement model in it. Dells are infamous about that..

Thanks for trying to help me, Ace!

Actually, I have found the exact correct Dell 4550 Dimension case fan for
16.95 from the JMC/Datech company who makes fans for Dell products.
