New printer problem

Sorry this is a bit off-post, but I'm desperate!
My new Epson inkject printer has used up all the original inks supplied and
I've fitted compatible cartidges.
But I now get a message when I try to print saying that I'm not using
genuine ink!!!!!
Does my new C86 now actually PREVENT me from using compatibles? If so, is
this legal?
Any advice on what I can do next. Any help urgently required.

Thanks for the reply, but what exactly is your link meant to convey? I have
looked into the matter of genuine versus compatibles and in my particular
case, where I'm printing thousands of pages a year, genuine is completely
out of the question. I have used compatibles for 6 years without the
slightest problem. I don't now need telling that I'm wrong thanks.

I ask again, is there any way to make my new C86 printer accept compatibles?

You have to address your issue with the manufacturer
of the ink cartridges you purchased.

Thanks Carey, but I fully realise I need to sort this out with my new
suppliers. Trouble is, that in the UK it's past closing time and they are
not available till tomorrow. I should be printing 500 pages tonight, hence I
said I'm desperate!
I ask again, is there no way in which I can get my printer to print tonight
using compatibles or do Epson now PREVENT this?
(CAN ANYONE ANSWER THIS QUESTION?)
If Epson prevent this, is it legal?

Sounds like your supposedly compatible ink cartridges
are not really all that compatible....probably a problem
with the electronics within the cartridge itself.

The only emergency solution you may have right now is to get you a
hypodermic needle and transfer the ink from your current cartridges and
put it in the ones you previous used (empty) that were compatible. Unless
there is a 24/7 retail store in your neighborhood that sells them.

That printer probably uses cartridges that have chips that have to be reset
or chips in the printer that have to be reset. Do your new cartridges have
chips on them?

Take a look at the newsgroup alt.comp.periphs.printers and do a search
for your printer. Chances are that someone else has had that problem.

The cartidges do have chips and are supposed to be OK with the Epson C86.
I would look at the "alt.comp.periphs.printers" newsgroup if I could find
it. My ISP is Wanadoo and it doesn't seem to list this group. How do I find
it?

You'll be gratified to know that the EU Competition Commission and OFT is
looking into the issue of printer manu's attemting to lock their printers to
only genuine manu. cartridges - expect a result in xxx years!!!
In the mean time do a google search, there is a method of fooling the
printer into thinking the cartridges are genuine.
In any case a laser printer is cheaper per page than inkjet
Also I would doubt that the C86 is designed for the amount of throughput
(pages) you are printing/month

Problem is now sorted. It was a faulty compatible cartridge. Have replaced
this following my suppliers instructions and all's well.
By the way, the suppliers did say that it is currently illegal in the UK for
makers to force users to use their own ink.

I'm glad that you got it sorted out. I am not sure if we in Canada and the
U.S.A. have that law or not...we should have if we don't.

I like my Canon i850. No chips and easily filled with the ink of my choice.
