Hi, I recently built a new pc and installed xp on it but I wanted to put my
existing copy of vista onto this. I'm not sure if it's oem or not but i am a
student and it is the academic license, so I don't know where I stand with
this. I have already reinstalled xp on the old pc that originally had vista.
The disk I have is the upgrade disk hence why I have already installed xp

Thanks

If your "existing copy of Vista" is already installed on another computer,
you cannot install it onto your new PC, you would need to purchase another
copy. One copy of Vista means one license to install it on one PC.

my original copy of vista has been uninstalled via a disk format from the old
pc and xp pro reinstalled on the new partition. Currently. I have vista
running on no computers and would like to know if I can install it on my new
pc

Hi Tucka

The issue here is that your Vista copy is an upgrade which means to use it
you must have a valid license for another OS that will be used to upgrade
from and that older OS license is no longer valid for use anywhere as it is
now part of the vista license.

So you have
PC 1 - running XP (old machine)
PC 2 - running XP and wants to use Vista Upgrade on it.

Now unless you own TWO XP licenses you do not have a license for the PC2
machine that you can upgrade from as it is actually on PC1.
If you have bought TWO XP licenses then use you upgrade on PC2 and then
activate by phone.
If you only own one XP license then you either need to buy another for PC 1
or get a full copy of Visa not an upgrade for PC 2.

Mike, I've had to give some similar bad news to a client who has Media
Center on his PC and has upgraded to Vista premium. However, his motherboard
has problems and, it appears, he is about to replace motherboard, cpu and
memory. As Media center is OEM and locked to the motherboard he to is in the
uncomfortable position of having to spend more money on buying another copy
of Vista!

Sorry about not updating thread, but I had a copy of xp pro in house so I
have installed that and put vista on after with almost no problems. However,
when I try to activate it, it says that my code has been used and I need a
new product key. Any help on where I stand?
