If I purchase a new PC with VISTA, would I be able to install as a slave the
HDDD from my XP PC (xp is instsalled)a nd be able to use the drive as a
storage drive without any modifications. After getting my data off the XP
drive I would then format the drive.

I don't know what you mean by "without any modifications" but generally
there is no problem slaving another hard drive in a Vista system. I've
done it all through the beta and now with RTM.

The only issue would be PATA vs. SATA which is what your new
computer will have. You might have to get an adapter to
install an older PATA [IDE] drive in the new computer.

No problem in terms of software and disk format compatibility.

Hardware compatibility may need some thought, depending on the old
and new: e.g. master/slave, SATA versus PATA, data and power cables
and connectors, mechanical fittings etc.

Hi Malke,
by no modifications I meant remove from PC that drive was a boot drive with
WIN XP and not reformat the drive but to install it as a slave as is. NOT A
DUAL BOOT. Just want to read data on the.

Thanks

Again it depends........if your new system has SATA drives and your old
drive is a PATA drive you will need to make sure that the SATA is 1st boot
...the old drive being the only PATA drive on the EIDE controller it would be
the master..end of cable connection,Slave drive if another drive was already
connected to that EIDE controller and you used the middle connection.
if your new system has PATA drive that would be the master and you would
need to change the jumper on the back of the old drive to slave and connect
to the middle connection of the cable...or if you are plugging it into a 2nd
EIDE controller you can leave it as master and plug it into the end
connection.

Since I only want to get date off the IDE drive, how about if I buy a drive
enclosure and access the drive as an external HDD via USB?
