New PC with Vista, using Office XP 2003

I just purchased a new PC with Vista and was assured at the time of purchase
that my version of Office XP 2003 is compatible. No apparent problem loading
it or the updates, but when I try to open Outlook, I get an error message
that says it needs to be re-loaded. That doesn't work either. I have to keep
this Office program as I do a lot of work from home, and my employer is
unlikely to move to the new products for a year or more. Any tips on making
this work. (I'm a nurse, not a techy)
 
outlook 2003 should work just fine on Vista. Look in control panel,
administrative tools, event viewer and see if it has better info on the
failure.

Did you make a new profile or use the vista file transfer tool to move
outlook?
 
I installed Office from the original CDs, then downloaded the updates.
Outlook with all my files is still on my old PC. I am a little concerned
about using the file transfer because I read in a lot of places that it loses
files. Until I get everything set up on the new one, I need to be able to
access those, so I just did a new install. Is there something else I should
download?

I will check the things you listed below when I get home. Thanks for your

BTW
OfficeXP and Office2003 are seperate versions, or are you saying you have
OfficeXp and Outlook2003?
 
Installing from the cd is the best way - the file transfer tool has a the
potential to make a mess of things.
 
Insert your Office2003 cd, select Repair and let it run.
Try OL again, if no go.
Control Panel > Mail Applet> Create New Profile, add accounts & new data
File, set it as default.
Test accounts, within mail applet.
Then start OL
If there is still a problem locate Event Viewer in Vista (As I dont use
Vista I cannot be specific on location, maybe Adminastrative Tools) and see
if that gives a clue as to why OL is failing
 
I couldn't find anything in Event Viewer that made any sense to me. The error
message that I see is MAPI32.DLL and says something about there possibly
being another mail program operating. I haven't set anything up - the
programs that were on the PC when I bought it are there, but I have not done
anything to activate them. I have a ninety-day trial version of Office 2007
that came on the PC; is it okay to uninstall that or should I leave it alone?
Will it help this problem to uninstall it?

This could very well be the problem. It's problematic installing a version
of Outlook, especially an earlier version, over the top of a trial version.

I have had the same problem. I have removed office 2007, changed my default
email client to outlook (instead of windows messenger) and I still get the
MAP132.dll error message. HELP!!!

Rename MAPI32.DLL to something else, like MAPI32.OLD and then start Outlook.
It should restore the missing DLL.

I purchased a new PC with Vista also - running IE7 - When I tried to install
Office XP - Outlook would not run - error message said it required IE5 -
what's up with that?

Did you maybe have a trial version of Office installed that you failed to
uninstall?

PS you stated OfficeXp 2003, there is either OfficeXp or Office 2003 not a
combination.

If its OfficeXp this is not fully compatible with Vista, usually Outlook
does not remember passwords, though I believe a workaround has been posted
 
I did not have any version of Office installed. Works came on the Dell
computer. Office XP is what I tried to install. It seemed to install okay -
but Outlook gave the problem - it gave message that it required IE5 and of
course IE7 is installed with Vista.
