New PC on existing connection won't connect

I have 4 PCs on a Linksys router connected to a DSL.
Everything works fine.
I just got a new PC with Win XP to replace another PC with Win XP. I
compared the setup on the 2 and as far as I can tell they're the same,
although I must have missed something.

I simply swap the machines and then run the create network wizard on the new
one to connect to my network. It does create a new Local Area Connection. I
check it's status and it says "Connected at 100 bps". The TCP/IP properties
all seem OK (obtain Ip automatically, etc). But then, it doesn't work. I run
ipconfig/renew on the new machine and it always comes back with "Can't
connect to DHCP server". The IP address is set at 169.254.31.97. I released
the ip on the old one before disconnecting it, thinking that that might make
a difference to the router - no difference. I ping the other machines on the
network - no result.

Your suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Try assigning an address manually to see if you can even get ping to work.

Here's how if you're not sure: Pick an address that your router has not
given out yet ... say 192.168.1.50 for example. (make sure the first 3
numbers are the same as the private address on the router) Now assign that
address to the "Local Area Connection" under TCP/IP properties with a
255.255.255.0 subnet mask and the private address of the router as your
gateway. Apply the settings

Now try pingging your router
ping 192.168.1.1

If ping worked, check your router's DHCP server configuration. You may be
out of addresses or there may be a security config you didn't know about.

If ping did not work, you may have a hardware issue. Try replacing the
cable first, then verify that your hub/switch/router is working properly.
