New NVidea Drivers cause machine reboot

I was told by Windows update to download new nvidea
drivers for my HP box running XP. Now, XP boots, but
restarts no matter what I try to do. Sometimes, it seems
to indicate that there's a problem with the new nvidea (or
whatever) video card drivers. Is this possible, or a
known problem?

What can I do to go back to before this update was
applied? How do I restart XP with some options before
loading fancy drivers -- is it F10 or ? On my machine,
CTL-F10 starts HP's own setup program, but even they
recommend using XPs recovery stuff first. But, how do I
start XP recovery routines?

It is pretty well established now that installing device drivers from
Windows Update is tricky at best and fatal at worst. The NVidia drivers
are the poster child for failed driver updates. Instructions for system
restore are at the following MS site:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/using/howto/gethelp/systemrestore.asp
