I did a clean install of xp and now cannot access network or internet. i
have tested the cable with another computer and it works fine. i tried to
use the nic from another computer that accessed the router and internet but
that card did not work either. i went an bought a new card and that one
also does not pick up an ip address.
settings are all set correctly.
i then check for irq conflicts and found the network card and video card
both used irq 11.
I changed the network cards slot. it now uses irq 6. i could not find any
other device using irq 6. Still no ip address.

it is obvious that the network card is good (tried it in an other computer
using the same cable and it worked fine) so the issue must lie in the
........ i dont have a clue where!!!

Does anyone have any ideas for me?

Please and thank you.

just a thought - do you have drivers for the NIC installed (right click on
My computer then manage then open the device manager - your card should be
in network adapters) and presumably you have a DHCP server - you should
check its logs as it may give some useful information.

1.Will the card accept a static ip address? - this will
confirm whether it is a problem with the
card/installation or DHCP.
Have you got any firewalls installed - 3rd party or XP's
built in? - if so, disable them whilst you troubleshoot
the problem.
2. Is the card "enabled"- it should say in network
connections, otherwise right click on the icon and see if
the first option is "enable".
3. Do you actually have an icon for the card? (is the
machine detecting it)
4. click start/run/"cmd"/enter/type "ipconfig /all" -
what information does it show?-any error messages?

Yes, it accepts static ip but still does not connect. If i do ipconfig /all
it shows the static ip that i manually put in.

No firewalls installed or enabled. 3 other computers have no problems
connecting.

Yes, card is enabled.

yes, machine detects card and drivers for new card (dlink 538TX) installed
no problem.

No error messages. Here is what comes out:

Windows IP Configuration:
Host name: s
Primary DNS Suffix:
Node Type: unknown
IP Routing enabled: no
Wins Proxy enabled: no

Ethernet Adapter Loca Area Connection:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix:
Descrition: Dlink DFE 538TX 10/100 Adapter #3
Physical Address: 00-40-05-8A-79-FD
DHCP Enabled: yes
Auto-configuration enabled: yes
Auto-configuration IP Address: 169.254.22.209
Subnet: 255.255.0.0
Default Gateway:

I really hope all this info can help to establish my problem with
connecting.

When you put in a static Ip, did you also put in the
default gateway (the routers internal/LAN address)?

when set up for DHCP(I'm assuming this comes from the
router) are there enough addresses in the scope for all
your machines to have one.

Other than this, I'm stuck for ideas. The only other thing
that catches my eye from the ipconfig that you posted is
the fact that your node type is set to "unknown" - it is
usually "hybrid", though this could be because you aren't
contacting the dhcp server. If you need to change this
manually, it has to be done through the registry if you
are comfortable with that (make a backup first)(I'm
reluctant to recommend this as I really don't know
whether that could cause a problem or not - perhaps
someone else could clarify) :

start/run/type "regedit"/HKEYLOCALMACINE/system/
currentcontrolset/services/netBT/parameters

type=REG_DWORD
value (for hybrid)=0x8

i reposted this morning under the subject, Baffled, can someone expalin ....
I did do the static ip and other info and it seems to be working just fine.
I am comfortable with registry altering.
now, why will this not work under dynamic ip settings???

Thank you for all your help and time...
