For my Asus A7n8X board I downloaded the latest (11-3-03) all-in-one chipset
driver which contained a new IDE nforce driver. Before the update, HDTach
was showing a CPU Utilization of 60-70% in benchmarks and now it is down to
18% with new drivers. What would be considered a good/fair number to try
to attain?? Using a Maxtor DiamondMax9 btw.

Not specific to your question, but does your cd burner still work? I'm
hesitant to try the new drivers because of previous issues.

Dang! That's why my CD writer stopped working so mysteriously! Sure
enough, I uninstalled the Nforce IDE drivers and now the CD writer is
working again.

As to the hard drive performance question, I don't notice any
performance difference, but I wasn't getting "60-70% CPU utilization"
with the stock Microsoft drivers in normal usage.

Gary,

I've done some more investigation and are you by any chance using Nero
Burning Rom? If so, that could be the problem and not the new ide
drivers.

Yes, I'm using Nero version 5.5.1042 with Windows XP Pro and an nForce
2 main board. I have no problems burning CDs with the Microsoft IDE
drivers, but I can't burn CDs with Nero and the new nVidia IDE drivers
(nForce unified drivers v. 3.13 released 11/2/03). I can also burn CDs
with my external USB2 CD RW drive using Nero (and with the nVidia IDE
drivers installed). Perhaps it is the interaction of Nero and the
nForce drivers.
