I don't know whether it has already been mentioned, but XPN seems to be
a fairly capable newsreader. At least, it won't download the complete
postings, just because you clicked on the header...

Well, I should have at least posted the link as well (sigh)

http://sourceforge.net/projects/xpn

requires GTK+2 and Python, to work properly.

....

Cousin Gabriele ....

I've been using the Python-based XPN newsreader
under Debian GNU/Linux daily for about 22 months
and like it very much ....

There have been several posts related to XPN here in ACF
over the past couple of years ....

This reply was posted with XPN ....

Thank you all guys.

dear Stanley, I have released a new XPN version, it has some
fixes and some little changes and it also has the "scroll-up" feature
;-)

Cousin Antonio ....

Thanks for the continued effort of developing XPN
and thanks again for showing me how to implement
the scroll-up feature in my current version ....

I think I remember how to save all of my current settings
and message files, but will have to check on some old notes
to be sure ....

I use XPN daily and look forwared to the newer version ....

Stanley, there is no need to save your settings and messages with this
version. You can simply overwrite it.
Anyway just to be sure, save your xpn dir (or the one where you put the
groups_info and dats dirs) before upgrading.

Cousin Antonio ....

Thanks ....

That sounds like a very nice improvement
and will save me some time as I like
to hang on to the messages that I have flagged
to keep ....

Which reminds me ....

Is it possible to get a Keep Sub-Thread option
that is analogous to the Watch Sub-Thread option ?

I like the option to pick and choose which individual messages
to keep, but often I also want to flag an entire thread to keep ....

Stanley, that's not an improvement, simply I didn't change the article
format (anyway I'll change it a bit in the next release). ;-)

OK .... I understand ....

Hopefully, there will be a procedure included
to convert the old version files to the new version format ....
This is one of the features I added in this release.

I found it in the | right-click > context menu
when clicking on a header ....

You must have been reading my mind ....

This is my first post using the new and improved xpn-0.5.7 ....

After extracting the xpn-0.5.7.tar.gz file,
I moved the groups_info dir and the config.txt file
from the previous version into the new version's dir ....

All of my subscribed groups and messages have been retained
and seem to be working fine ....

I did have to monkey with the font settings
in Preferences > Display as by default
in the new verson they were set to use System Fonts
which is not my preference ....

The new Preferences menu looks very nice ....

Thanks again for your efforts in developing XPN
and making it freely available ....

I'm thinking about it, the most simple way is to do an "Export Newsrc"
with the old XPN and then "Import Newsrc" with the new.

Yep, there is also a new context menu for the groups.

Maybe, so don't think about you bank account ;-)

Yes, but I thought that is better to provide a system-aligned
configuration at the start, and then you can change the fonts by
yourself later.

Cousin Antonio ....

While reading the news last night using the newer version of XPN,
it finally dawned on me that the name of the current newsgroup
that I had selected was displayed in the title bar ....

I was so accustomed to seeing it there from adding the patch
to the earlier version myself that I had failed to realize
that you had included it ....

It's very nice to know that some freeware authors
such as yourself listen to their users and actually
follow up on some of the suggestions ....

Thanks again ....

There has been a lengthy thread in news.software.readers about this
newreader. The author is one of the participants. You may find it of
interest.
