New Network

I may be required to establish a LAN in the near future, but have never done
before. I consider myself to be have above average hardware/software skills
(have built many PCs and overcome dial up connection problems with old
Psion's etc... Where is the best place to look for step by step "set up a
new network" instructions for newbie's like me.

Also, have often seen Linux mentioned regarding networks. I know this is an
alternative operating system to Windows, but what are the pro's and con's
with each?
